DFB Cup 1996/97
The 1997 DFB Cup winner was VfB Stuttgart . In the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin , VfB Stuttgart won 2-0 against the then regional league team Energie Cottbus on June 14, 1997. Defending champion and Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Kaiserslautern was eliminated in the first round against regional league team SpVgg Greuther Fürth , which was formed from SpVgg Fürth and TSV Vestenbergsgreuth before the season.
In the European Cup Winners' Cup , Stuttgart was the last German team to reach the final, which the club lost 1-0 to the English cup winners FC Chelsea .
