FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1996/97 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship . The season began on August 16, 1996 and ended on May 31, 1997.
Season overview
The season after the successful European Championship in England began with new coaching faces. The Bayern Munich trained again Giovanni Trapattoni , Bayer 04 Leverkusen presented with Christoph Daum a returnee from Turkey, and the VfB Stuttgart later celebrated national coach Joachim Loew the first title in his coaching career.
Leverkusen was also the surprise of the season, but this time in a successful way: If you could keep the class with difficulty in 1995/96, you were now playing for the championship. Ulf Kirsten , who was also the top scorer, played a major role in the success of Leverkusen . Bayern became champions on matchday 33 with a 4-2 win over VfB Stuttgart, while Leverkusen lost 4-0 in Cologne at the same time. The season ended two points behind Bayern Munich.
VfB Stuttgart won the cup with a 2-0 win over the then third division Energie Cottbus . The cup final was also the last joint appearance of the so-called "magic triangle" at VfB Stuttgart. This consisted of Fredi Bobič , Giovane Élber and Krassimir Balakow , who caused a sensation among the Swabians. Giovane Élber moved to Bayern Munich after this season , but not without making VfB Stuttgart cup winners with his two goals against Cottbus .
After the season goodbye Jurgen Klinsmann towards Italy , Uwe Seeler came from the office of HSV back Chairmen. With SC Freiburg , Fortuna Düsseldorf and FC St. Pauli , the league said goodbye to three “cult clubs” at the end of the season.
Aside from Leverkusen, a positive surprise was VfL Bochum , who qualified for the UEFA Cup as a newcomer . Internationally, things went optimally from a German perspective, as FC Schalke 04 won the UEFA Cup and Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League. German clubs had only achieved this in 1975.
