history

Gerry Weber International AG goes back to Hatex KG, which was founded on March 1, 1973 in Halle (Westphalia) by Gerhard Weber and Udo Hardieck. Initially, the company produced and sold women's trousers, and the range of women's fashion was quickly expanded. In the following years, parts of the production were outsourced to contractors abroad (so-called intermediate masters). In 1986 the brand name "Gerry Weber" (named after the company founder Gerhard Weber) was protected worldwide and quickly became known through the sponsorship of Steffi Graf .

In 1989 the company went public and renamed Gerry Weber International AG. Also in 1989 the Taifun Collection was added as a further clothing line, followed in 1994 by the Samoon Collection for women with connection sizes ; production was increasingly relocated abroad. From 2000, the company also issued licenses under the Gerry Weber label (shoes, glasses, fragrances, bags, jewelry). In 2006, a men's collection was created under the brand name Gerry Weber Men , which was initially granted under license, produced in-house from 2008 and taken off the market in 2009.

In January 2015 it was announced that Ralf Weber, the son of the company's founder, would become the company's CEO. In February 2015, Gerry Weber took over the fashion company Hallhuber after approval by the Cartel Office . In 2016, the company closed 103 branches for financial reasons, two thirds of them in Germany. In December 2016 it was announced that the company had also sold a large property in Düsseldorf.

In the summer of 2016, Gerry Weber launched a new women's fashion brand called “talkabout” . This is not sold in the Group's own stores, but through selected partners.

On January 25, 2019, the parent company Gerry Weber International AG with around 580 employees filed for insolvency in self-administration at the Bielefeld District Court . Initially, only the parent company Gerry Weber International AG with around 580 employees was affected by the insolvency application. Subsidiaries such as Hallhuber were therefore not affected . On February 8, 2019, it was announced that Gerry Weber Retail GmbH had also filed for insolvency. So Hallhuber is affected. For Hallhuber, however, bridge financing could be obtained from an investor who also received a purchase option. In an interview with Spiegel in spring 2019, company founder Gerhard Weber said that the construction of a logistics center, which went into operation in Künsebeck in 2015 , was too big and too expensive.

In April 2019, the closure of 120 Gerry Weber stores in Germany by the end of 2021 as part of the company's restructuring was announced. In August 2019, Gerry Weber presented an insolvency plan, on which the creditors are to vote on September 18, 2019. The existing shareholders were removed from the company during the phase, branches and jobs were cut, and the financial investors Robus, Whitebox and JP Morgan financed the ongoing business. According to the company, the Bielefeld District Court canceled the insolvency proceedings on January 1, 2020. In June 2020, the majority of the bankruptcy creditors agreed to defer 35 percent of their claims until the end of 2023.

Stock exchange listing

The company's share was listed on the SDAX of the German stock exchange until June 28, 2011 . The company has been listed in the MDAX since June 29, 2011, where it replaced the Tognum company share . After a sharp drop in the share price due to profit warnings, the share climbed back into the SDAX on September 21, 2015 and finally had to leave it on March 19, 2018.

A share of 37.2% is attributable to foreign markets, with 27.1% generated within the European Union (excluding Germany) and 10.1% outside the EU. Most of the logistics are handled by a fully automated logistics center that was completed at the end of 2015. The company states that the handling capacity is up to 30 million articles per year, with the possibility of expansion to up to 37 million.

Sponsorship

The company is also known for the Gerry Weber Open ATP turf tennis tournament held in the Gerry Weber Stadium and the sponsorship activities of the neighboring Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld ( jersey sponsor 1996/97 and 1997/98) and the Bundesliga handball club TBV Lemgo .

privacy

Since January 2011, the company has been equipping all items delivered to stores with an RFID chip. The electronic product code (EPC) is stored on the RFID chip as a summary of the EAN code known from the barcode and a serial number of the item of clothing. In the majority of parts, this chip is located in the care label, which is usually placed in the lower left side seam. There is an English-language reference to the RFID technology on the care label: “RFID inside. Remove before wearing ”, translated“ Contains RFID. Remove before wearing ”.

The company received the ECR Award 2010 and the Retail Technology Award for the use of RFID technology and won the RFID Journal LIVE! 2011 conference a prize for the "best RFID implementation".

Gerry Weber hit negative headlines in 2012 after it became known that the company's clothing would still be equipped with RFID chips after it was sold. In a field test by FoeBuD it was shown that the globally unique serial numbers of the chips can be read without contact from a distance of up to 8 meters. According to the company, the number code is stored in a database .

The public debate about Gerry Weber's RFID practice caused the company to take a stand. Gerry Weber states that individual items of clothing purchased cannot be assigned to the respective buyer via the data stored on the RFID chip. At the same time, the company would like to point out that the labels can be removed at the checkout when purchasing. The company also created an information sheet on the topic for customers, which can be found on the Internet.
