Frank Gerster (born April 15, 1976 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German football player and coach .

Player career

societies

At the age of four, Gerster started playing football at FC Kempten , which was based in his birthplace, and at the age of 16 moved to the youth department of FC Augsburg . With the A-Juniors he won the German championship against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1993 - he contributed a goal to the 3-1 victory - and on June 26, 1994 in Augsburg, with the 2-1 win against 1. FC Köln, the DFB Youth Kicker Cup. At the age of 18, he was signed by FC Bayern Munich in 1994 for their regional league team, for which he played 108 league games until 1998, scored 17 goals and later became a U-20 national player.

For the 1996/97 season he rose to the professional team, for which he was on March 12, 1997 (22nd matchday) in the 0-2 defeat in the away game against Arminia Bielefeld - with a substitution for Marcel Witeczek in the 79th minute - in the Bundesliga debuted and contributed to the German championship with only three short appearances. Internationally, he made his debut on December 10, 1997 in the 0-1 defeat by IFK Göteborg in the last group game of the Champions League . In the following season he was substituted on in only five games. Since he was unable to prevail against the internationally experienced team-mates Christian Nerlinger , Dietmar Hamann and Michael Tarnat , he switched to league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt for the 1998/99 season . Since he was only used there in two seasons on February 20, 1999 (19th matchday) in the 1: 4 defeat in the away game against TSV 1860 Munich , he changed - after he changed during the first season (Gerster should be given up) And also in the following season no interested party was found - for the 2000/01 season for the second division SSV Reutlingen 05 .

In Reutlingen, Gerster initially had a regular place in the central midfield, but lost it to Ralf Becker after a few game days . With the descent of his club at the end of the 2002/03 season, Gerster left this too, as he did not get beyond a role as a supplementary player. In two seasons he was used in 34 games, few of them over the entire season, where he scored two goals. With the Hessian league club Borussia Fulda , Gerster found a new club in the 2003/04 season . For the 2004/05 season, the Hessian Football Association refused the club the license and Gerster moved to the Saxon league club FC Sachsen Leipzig .

In his first season with the Saxons he won with 2: 1 after extra time against the third division Chemnitzer FC to Saxony Cup and qualified for the German Cup . With the 3rd place in the table , the goal of recovery was missed. In the season 2005/06 Gerster was captain of the team. After a difficult start, coach Wolfgang Frank was dismissed in October 2005 and inherited by his assistant coach Hans-Jörg Leitzke . Leitzke put Gerster off as captain and did not consider him in the other league games. Gerster then left the club during the winter break and switched to the regional league team Kickers Emden . Equipped only with a contract until the end of the season, he left the East Frisian club after half a year and switched to the regional league promoted 1. FC Magdeburg for whom he played 34 league games as a regular. With the club he finished 3rd in the table at the end of the season and barely missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2007/08 season , in which Gerster scored three goals in 32 games, 1. FC Magdeburg missed the qualification for the newly founded 3rd division . The subsequent contract negotiations did not lead to an agreement. After Gerster initially remained without a club, he signed on September 4, 2008 with the - meanwhile fourth-class - regional league team Chemnitzer FC for one year. Here, however, he only made four appearances due to injuries. In the summer of 2009 Frank Gerster ended his active career.

National team

Gerster took part in the Junior World Cup in 1995 in Qatar and came in the three group matches , the 1-1 draw against Cameroon, the 1-2 defeat against Costa Rica and the 1-1 draw against the Selection of Australia, for use.

His other three games for the U-20 national team he previously completed on December 13, 1994, in a 2-2 draw against Nigeria, and on January 23 and 25, 1995 against the selections of Portugal and Spain, which each with 1: 3 were lost. For the U-21 national team he played 14 times, where he was used for the first time on March 26, 1996 in Regensburg in the goalless draw against the selection of Denmark . He scored his first goal on September 9, 1997 in Solingen in a 7-0 victory over Armenia . He played his last game on March 24, 1998 in Beirut in a 7-0 victory over the senior national team of Lebanon .

Coaching career

In the 2010/11 season he was assistant coach of the regional division Borussia Dortmund II , who finished the season in sixth place in the table. After the season he left the club and later opened as a player's advisor - in cooperation with the law firm Dr. Udo Kornmeier - the Hattrick Sports agency (as of October 2013).

In January 2013, the amateur club TSV Vatanspor Bad Homburg playing in the group league Frankfurt (Group West) secured the services of the former Bundesliga professionals for the second half of the season. Gerster, who has coached the club since 2013, will be followed by Enis Dzihic in the 2015/16 season.
