Ascent

After 1. FC Köln had already been mathematically ascertained four game days before the end of the round, a series of defeats in Cologne began on matchday 31 with a 3-0 defeat against SC Freiburg, which lasted until the end of the season. SC Freiburg ousted 1. FC Köln from the top of the table on the penultimate matchday and thus secured the second division championship.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz 05 and Greuther Fürth have been behind the top duo since the 28th matchday with changing leadership. On the 32nd matchday, the three clubs were tied on points, Eintracht Frankfurt and Greuther Fürth tied for goal differences in places three to five. After a draw in the penultimate game against Wacker Burghausen, the people of Fürth were out of the race and lost on the last matchday at Karlsruher SC.

The duel for the third promotion place between Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the last day of the match turned out to be a real heart-stopping final. The Eintracht played out a 3-1 lead against SSV Reutlingen, but had to accept the 3-3 equalizer in the middle of the second half. Mainz was clearly leading at Eintracht Braunschweig at this point, won 4: 1 in the end and already thought they were promoted. Eintracht Frankfurt, however, scored three more goals in the closing stages, won 6-3 and made it back up at the last minute. Mainz 05 remained second class for another year.

descent

The relegated teams of the season were Eintracht Braunschweig, FC St. Pauli, SV Waldhof Mannheim and SSV Reutlingen. Reutlingen achieved 39 athletic points in the season, which would have been enough to stay in the league, but the club got six points deducted before the season for violating the licensing procedure.

While St. Pauli and Mannheim were already relegated before the last match day, Reutlingen and Braunschweig, who were also placed on a relegation zone before the last match day, were still able to achieve relegation. Before the last matchday, Oberhausen, Karlsruhe and Ahlen were still threatened with relegation.

Reutlingen had to achieve a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt and hope that Karlsruhe would lose the last game against Fürth and Braunschweig would not win.

For Braunschweig a win against Mainz 05 was a prerequisite. A rescue was not possible without a simultaneous defeat of the competitors Oberhausen, Karlsruhe or Ahlen. Although Oberhausen lost the last game against Ahlen, Braunschweig would have had to win a big win in order not to be relegated.

Braunschweig and Reutlingen both lost their last games and were relegated.

SV Waldhof Mannheim and SSV Reutlingen 05 received no license for the regional league in the subsequent licensing process for the coming season and were relegated directly to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg (then fourth division).
