Ascent
Arminia Bielefeld made it back to the Bundesliga. With Unterhaching and Ulm, there were two more promoted players who made it into the Bundesliga for the first time. Ulm managed the feat of marching straight through from the regional league to the Bundesliga. Hannover 96 was also well placed as a newcomer and almost made it through to Ulm instead of Ulm on the last matchday.

With Uerdingen, Wattenscheid and Düsseldorf, three former Bundesliga clubs had to start their way into the third division. Fourth relegation was Gütersloh, so that for the first time all relegated came from a single federal state.
