Bundesliga 1979/80

The 2nd Bundesliga 1979/80 was played in two seasons (north and south) with 20 (north) and 21 (south) teams. The two relay champions Arminia Bielefeld (North relay) and 1. FC Nürnberg (South relay) were promoted directly to the 1st Bundesliga. The third promotion place was played in the relegation between the two second-placed Rot-Weiss Essen (North Season) and Karlsruher SC (South Season). Karlsruhe prevailed here.

In addition to the founding members of the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC , the former German champions Eintracht Braunschweig (all of them in the North relay) were relegated from the 1st Bundesliga and played in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1980/81 season. Werder Bremen and Eintracht Braunschweig were promoted again the next year.

Never before and never after have there been more local derbies than this season: Three clubs from Hanover (Hanover 96, OSV Hanover and Arminia Hanover) and two clubs from Cologne (Viktoria and Fortuna Cologne) played in the northern season. In the southern season there were local derbies between SC Freiburg and Freiburger FC and between ESV and MTV Ingolstadt.

Arminia Bielefeld achieved the highest victory in the north season in the home game against Arminia Hannover with 11-0.

North

The previous year's relegated Arminia Bielefeld was with a lead of twelve points on the table runner-up Rot-Weiss Essen champion of the North relay. The result relative to the number of games (1.737: 0.263 points, 2.526 points according to the three-point rule, 3.158: 0.816 goals) and the goal difference (+89) are still the best marks in the second division today (in the season two larger teams a year later Werder Bremen achieved the record in terms of absolute points and Hertha BSC in terms of absolute goals.) Rot-Weiss Essen missed the relegation after the season despite a 3-1 win in the second leg due to a 5-1 defeat in the first leg the climb.

In addition to the DSC Wanne-Eickel , which returned its license due to financial problems and was thus the first relegated team, three other teams were relegated to the respective major leagues: OSC Bremerhaven , SV Arminia Hannover and Wuppertaler SV . The sporty relegated SC Herford remained in the 2nd Bundesliga.

A unique curiosity this season was the late license withdrawal for Westfalia Herne. After the bankruptcy of their sponsor Goldin , Westfalia entered the first matchday at SC Herford and even won the game 1-0, but then had to return the license and was replaced by Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid. The game in Herne was canceled, Westfalia and Lüdenscheid swapped places in the 2nd Bundesliga North and Oberliga Westfalen.
