Soccer match Arminia Bielefeld - SV Arminia Hannover 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The soccer game between Arminia Bielefeld and SV Arminia Hannover on May 23, 1980 was an encounter from the penultimate matchday of the second division season 1979/80 . Arminia Bielefeld won the game 11-0 and set the record for the highest victory in the history of the 2nd Bundesliga, which is still valid today.

prehistory

Arminia Bielefeld was in the pre-season from the Bundesliga relegated, but was able to keep his team and had to make any service provider. The team turned out to be too strong for the competition and set several records over the course of the season, some of which are still valid today. The Bielefeld team won twelve games in a row and also remained unbeaten for 28 games in a row. Five game days before the end of the season, the championship and direct promotion for the Bielefeld were certain.

“We were just a great group of people. We harmonized perfectly. Everyone was able to score. Perhaps you can still turn one off alone. But as flexible as we were back then ... We took advantage of it, we wanted to win everything. "

Nevertheless, there were internal quarrels. Goalkeeper Uli Stein had sharply criticized his teammates, the coaching team and the board of directors and was then suspended . Friedel Schüller took over the place in the gate. The namesake from Hanover, however, fell into the relegation zone shortly after the start of the season and suffered from internal squabbles on the board. The Hanoverians lost a total of eight games in a row twice. The team was already relegated five game days before the end of the season, so that the Bielefeld side only speculated about the amount of victory in advance. In the Bielefeld local press, the Hanoverians were identified as "willing to score goals". Before the game, the Bielefeld team occupied the first and the Hanoverians the penultimate place in the table.

The game

The game was kicked off on Friday evening at 7 p.m. by referee Hans-Heinrich Barnick from Schenefeld . 5000 spectators saw the game on the Bielefelder Alm . Although the game was only of statistical importance for both teams , the Hanoverians played offensively and came up with some scoring chances in the first half hour, which Friedel Schüller saved. Frank Pagelsdorf scored the opening goal for Bielefeld in the 17th minute. Norbert Eilenfeldt , Christian Sackewitz , Ulrich Büscher and again Pagelsdorf ensured a 5-0 half-time lead.

In the first minute of the second half, Christian Sackewitz increased the penalty to 6-0. The actual penalty taker for Bielefeld, Roland Peitsch , left the execution to Sackewitz, as the latter still had a chance of winning the title of top scorer . Gerd-Volker Schock and again Ulrich Büscher increased to 8-0 within a minute before Christian Sackewitz and Norbert Eilenfeldt ensured a double-digit result. Curiously, the scoreboard on the Bielefelder Alm was not designed for double-digit results. Peter Krobbach finally ensured the final score.

According to referee Barnick, the game was not as clear-cut as the result would suggest.

“It actually went up and down. The Hanoverians tried, but the shot always backfired. "

- Hans-Heinrich Barnick
