The Saint-Irénée fortress was built from 1832 to 1842 and was part of Lyon's first city walls .

history

The pentagonal building on a 150 × 180 m floor plan was mainly used to house the commander of the western sector of Lyon . The fortress could accommodate up to 800 people in the individual garrisons.

The supply in the powder tower, in which 22 tons of explosives could initially be stored and which was increased to 42 tons in 1880, could supply 60 cannons.

The fortress had a kitchen, laundry, canteen, horse stables and several storage rooms.

today

This fortress has been used in various ways since its abandonment:

In the fortress there is a remnant of the Aqueduct of Greed ; this part of the aqueduct is listed.

Height information

Elevation mark at the fortress entrance.
Altitude affichée par l'IGN sur le fort.

In the lower right part of the entrance to the Saint-Irénée fortress, the number 380 is engraved with a horizontal line about 1 meter above the ground. It is evidently the height in feet , referring to a mark on the Saône-Quai near the Pont Bonaparte.

A study by ASSIL (ASsociation des SItes de Loyasse) shows that the number given cannot be calculated in feet, but that it is probably a negative number that relates to a higher point (around 660 m) and perhaps the fortress of Mont Verdun at an altitude of 625 m.

To support this thesis, members of the society took further measurements on similar markings; the totality of the marked heights and protection by the IGN , be it on the basis of a marking or on the basis of a plan, always result in the height of 660 m.
