The 5th arrondissement is one of the nine arrondissements of Lyon (city district). It includes the hill of Fourvière and Vieux Lyon .
The arrondissement is located in the northwest of the urban area of Lyon. It is bounded to the east by the Saône . In the north it borders on the 9th arrondissement , in the northeast on the 1st arrondissement , in the southeast on the 2nd arrondissement , in the south on Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon , in the south-west on Francheville and in the west on Tassin-la-Demi-Lune .
history
The 5th arrondissement is one of the five created by presidential decree of March 24, 1852. The 5th arrondissement is the historic heart of Lyon: 43 BC. BC Munatius Plancus founded the Roman colony Lugdunum on the Fourvière . Here, in the 5th arrondissement, the Roman and medieval Lyon blossomed before the Saône was crossed.
The historical origins of Lyon can be discovered very nicely on a touristic tour: behind Alt-Lyon and the Fourvière there are the residential districts Point-duJour, Champvert, Ménival, Saint-Irénée, which are less well known but trace the traces of the historical Roman Show past.
By decree of August 1, 1963, the municipality of Saint-Rambert-l'Île-Barbe was assigned to the 5th arrondissement. In the following year the arrondissement was divided and the northern part became the 9th arrondissement (decree of August 12, 1964).

Streets, squares, green spaces
There are three main axes:
- The Fourvière Tunnel is known for its enormous traffic jams.
- Along the banks of the Saône along the Vieux Lyon district
- The east-west thoroughfare, which is usually congested in the morning and evening.
The 5th arrondissement is the necessary passage for commuters from the west of Lyon when driving to work in the center. The main passages are: The ascent of Choulans (montée de Ch.) And avenue 1 er DFL, avenue Barthélemy Buyer , ascent to Chemin Neuf, avenue Point-du-Jour, rue Joliot-Curie.
The streets in Vieux-Lyon are reserved for pedestrians and residents (driveway, parking lot), so there are no through traffic.
There are many squares in Vieux-Lyon: Place Saint-Paul, Place Change, Place Gouvernement, Place Baleine, Place Saint-Jean, Place Trinité, Place Saint Georges, Place Crepu. In the rest of the arrondissement there are the following places worth mentioning: Place Fourvière and the adjoining forecourt, Place Abbé Larue, Place Saint-Irénée, Place Bénédict Teissier, ...
This arrondissement is without a doubt the one with the most green spaces in Lyon. There are numerous parks, the most important of which should be mentioned here:
- Park of Heights , located between the Loyasse cemetery and the Tour métallique de Fourvière
- The rose park that connects the old town with the Notre-Dame de Fourvière .
- The park at the town hall of the 5th arrondissement in the Point-du-Jour district.
- The Park of the Guard, between the rue de la Garde and the aqueducts; the park covers 12 hectares and has recently been rebuilt.
- The Champvert footpath with 1.5 km along avenue Barthélémy Buyer. It is the former track system on the Saint-Just - Vaugneray railway line .
- The Champvert Park, which joins the footpath that leads to an Art Nouveau villa.
The district is still loosened up by many green spaces, squares and gardens.
