Gadagne Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musées Gadagne form a museum complex in the old town of the city of Lyon in France. You are in the “Hôtel des Pierrevive”, which is also commonly known as “Hôtel Gadagne”. Located in the Saint-Jean district, the ensemble consists of a museum dedicated to the history of Lyon and another dedicated to the “art of puppets”. Due to dilapidation, the museum was closed in 1998 and reopened on June 12, 2009 after more than 10 years of renovation and expansion work.

The Hôtel Particulier

The museum is located in a Hôtel Particuler , built in the early 16th century by the Pierrevive brothers and rented from 1538 by the merchant and banker Thomas Il de Gadagne. Bought up by his sons, Guilaume and Thomas III in 1545, it is immediately undergoing major renovations. The difference between the two brothers is such that they each live in one of the main parts of the building, which does not prevent them from leading a great life and organizing splendid celebrations. They remain owners until 1581.

The Gadagne (or Guadagni ) are a rich family of Florentine origin who have been present in Lyon since the 15th century. Their colossal wealth, which they acquired from trade and the Gadagne bank, led to the Lyon proverb “rich like Gadagne” at this time. Thomas I of Gadagne, the great-uncle of Guillaume and Thomas III, was by far the richest man from Lyon, who lent money to various kings of France and financed an expedition to the New World. He gives Luise of Savoy part of the ransom that enables the liberation of King Francis I (France) , who has been a prisoner in Italy since the Battle of Pavia in 1525.

In the 18th century the building was divided into small residential units and owes its existence only to the partial purchase by the city of Lyon in 1902. Today one takes a staircase that leads to the door, which is surmounted by a first building structure. One enters a large, majestic courtyard adorned with a fountain and at the end of which is a gallery of superimposed passages that allow communication between the two buildings on each floor.

The museums

The building has been classified as a historic monument since 1920. It was gradually bought up by the city of Lyon between 1902 and 1920.

On January 19, 1998, the Lyon City Council decided on extensive expansion and renovation work, which began that same year. However, the Gadagne Museum will remain open to the public until July 2003. After ten years of construction and a major archaeological excavation campaign, the museum will partially reopen in April 2007 (temporary exhibition halls), then fully in June 2009.

The keys to the city of Lyon

The Lyon Historical Museum has been housed in the Hotel Gadagne since 1921. It houses the collections installed in the town hall until 1857. The history of the city is presented chronologically from antiquity to the present day in 30 rooms, in which objects, plans, engravings and testimonies from different epochs are shown.

The Puppet Museum has been located in the Hotel Gadagne since 1950, and is organized around the original puppet Guignol. Visiting the puppet collections used to be an integral part of the Lyon Museum of History. After the renovations in the 2000s, these collections are now combined in a separate museum room.

In April 2017, the first three rooms on the tour were renovated and the museum was renamed “Musée des arts de la marionnette”. The following six rooms remained unchanged, but their renovation is planned for 2019.

Visitor numbers

Number of visitors to the museum (2001-2014)

The decrease in visitor numbers in 2013 compared to 2012 is due to a lower level of visitor interest in the exhibition “ Lyon, center du monde! ", Compared to the previous exhibitions, especially" Gourmandise "and the " 20. Century " to explain.
