Tour métallique de Fourvière

The Tour métallique de Fourvière is a landmark of Lyon . It is a steel lattice tower modeled on the Eiffel Tower with a height of 85.9 meters and a weight of 210 tons, which was built between 1892 and 1894 according to plans by Gustave Eiffel on the Fourvière hill . It served as a viewing tower until November 1st, 1953 , today it is a broadcast tower - not open to the public .

Historical background

The tower was built by a private person, a restaurateur by the name of Gay, on the occasion of the great Lyon exhibition of 1894, but was and is a deliberate mark of the republican, secular faction of the citizenry and a challenge to the symbol of the Catholic-conservative circles, which the neighboring St. Mary's Basilica erected by Notre-Dame de Fourvière .
