Dieter Schatzschneider (born April 26, 1958 in Hanover ) is a former German soccer player and coach.

career

"Schatz" or "the Tall One", as he was called by his fans, is still number one in the all-time top scorer list in the second division and he was Hannover 96's most successful scorer . Schatzschneider completed 96 Bundesliga games and was nominated for the 1984 Olympic selection .

Hamburger SV player

After Schatzschneider had become the top scorer of the 2nd Bundesliga in 1982/83 , Hamburger SV signed him to replace Horst Hrubesch . Schatzschneider was just as unable to meet the high expectations as Wolfram Wuttke , who had moved to Hamburg at the same time. In 31 games of the 1983/84 season, Schatzschneider scored 15 goals; however, its performance was rated as insufficient. Above all, the lack of willingness to run and egotistical style of play were criticized. In the 1983/84 season, HSV gambled away five possible titles, including losing the 1983 World Cup in Tokyo, where Schatzschneider was injured only on the bench. After the season he moved to FC Schalke 04 .

Quotes about his time at HSV

  • "I knew from day one that it would not be easy for me."
  • He later remarked self-critically:
"When I consider what Magath and Co. put in front of me at the time, I should have done at least thirty things!"
  • “I was totally selfish about my goals. I am largely guilty of that. But Wolfram Wuttke and I were certainly not the only culprits. "

After the career

To this day, Schatzschneider works as a trainer (including FC Augsburg , Sportfreunde Ricklingen , SV Arminia Hannover , SVG Göttingen 07 ) and as a columnist for the sports department of Bild in Hannover. He is also a confidante and advisor to Martin Kind , the President of Hannover 96. Since the 2008/09 season, Schatzschneider has been a scout for the youth department and “brand ambassador” for Hannover 96. At the end of March 2019, Schatzschneider announced his departure from the Hannover 96 club after In the election of the supervisory board of the parent club, the previous chairman Martin Kind was voted out and the new supervisory board was formed from representatives of the fan scene. He justified his move with the words: "For me it is out of the question that I will be represented by people who are elected by people who exercise violence in the stadium and use pyrotechnics".

Personal

He grew up in the Hanover district of Vahrenheide . In his words the “muscle corner” of Hanover, a district where “muscles were needed to assert oneself”. Today he lives with his family in Kleinburgwedel at the gates of Hanover.

In August 2013 he caused a stir with the statement that in the 1970s and 1980s doping with means such as Captagon was quite widespread in the Bundesliga. However, he himself did not dop.

After Schatzschneider had referred to the FC Bayern Munich team as the “piss team” in May 2015, the club filed charges of insult. The public prosecutor's office in Munich I closed the proceedings against payment of a fine of 2000 euros.
