Francisco Copado (born July 19, 1974 in Kiel ) is a former German soccer player and current coach of Spanish descent.

Career as a player

Youth and stations until 2000

Copado learned to play football in Kiel. First at Eintracht Kiel, then later at Holstein Kiel, he went through the various youth teams.

For the 1992/1993 season he received a professional contract with Hamburger SV , whose scouts had been keeping an eye on the offensive player for quite some time. When Felix Magath became HSV coach in 1995 , Copado had only three Bundesliga appearances to book. In the 1995/96 season, ten more appearances in the dress of the Hanseatic League followed before he broke up his tents in Hamburg during the winter break.

Copado moved to his parents' home country at the beginning of 1996, as he moved to the second Spanish division for RCD Mallorca . In the 1996/97 season he made a major contribution to Mallorca's promotion to the Primera División with 18 goals. Then Francisco Copado returned to Germany.

Tennis Borussia Berlin lured the midfielder to the Spree in 1997. There he played under coach Hermann Gerland as a director behind the top and with his 15 goals this season he played a key role in TeBe becoming the undefeated Northeast regional league champion and advancing to the second division . However, he missed the decisive penalty in the penalty shootout of the relegation game against Hannover 96, so that TeBe had to go to a second relegation game. Having arrived in the second division, Copado was far less dangerous than in the promotion year.

SpVgg Unterhaching (2000-2005)

In 2000 Copado moved to the former Bundesliga club SpVgg Unterhaching . The coach at the time, Lorenz-Günther Köstner , absolutely wanted Copado in Haching. After a tough negotiation game, the commitment finally came about. But after just a few games, Copado was less noticeable due to his performance on the pitch or in training, but instead created a dubious image as a diva and party animal. For disciplinary reasons, Köstner suspended his midfield strategist for ten months. During this time, the Spaniard had to keep fit far away from the Unterhachingen sports park. Only when Köstner was dismissed from the Munich suburban club, which had meanwhile been relegated to the second division and again in danger of relegation, and Rainer Adrion took over the office, Copado was “pardoned”.

Under Wolfgang Frank , who made him captain , he developed into a high performer. The "colorful bird" seemed to be purified and enjoyed an exceptional position in Unterhaching. He was finally able to call up his great potential and showed good, often outstanding performances. The Spaniard was able to convince both in the central role in attacking midfield and in the attack. He played a decisive role in the fact that Unterhachinger , who had meanwhile even been relegated to the Regionalliga Süd , moved back into the second Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt (2005/2006)

In 2005 he made the leap into the first Bundesliga for the third time by signing a contract with Eintracht Frankfurt until 2008. The transition from the second to the first Bundesliga was difficult for him at first, probably also because coach Friedhelm Funkel wanted him to work hard for a regular place. But Copado bit his way through and offered himself to Funkel through significantly improved training performance. So it happened that he caused a sensation in the second half of the first half of the season and contributed five goals and five assists in ten games. In December 2005 he was even named Player of the Month. He could not maintain the level in the second half of the season (1 goal and 1 assist in 14 games), whereby the soaring of Eintracht ended abruptly and at the end even had to tremble about relegation. Ultimately, this led to the loss of his regular place and to leaving Eintracht Frankfurt during the current 2006/07 season.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2006-2008)

Copado found his new sporting home with the ambitious southern regional division TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , who started the season with the clear goal of promotion to the second division and strengthened accordingly. Francisco Copado was able to meet the expectations placed on him, as he scored 14 goals in 28 games and thus made a major contribution to achieving the goal of the season for Hoffenheim, who finished second behind SV Wehen and thus in the 2007/08 season Second Bundesliga started. With TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, he took second place in the table in the 2nd Bundesliga and was promoted to the Bundesliga . In the first half of the Bundesliga season in 2008/2009, however, he was rarely used, which is why he agreed with the club to prematurely terminate his contract, which ran until 2010, in order to maintain his sporting and professional prospects after his active career to be able to re-orientate once.

SpVgg Unterhaching (2009 to March 2015)

On January 7th, 2009 he moved to his former place of work, SpVgg Unterhaching. On March 30, 2009, however, he left the club again. On March 31, 2015, he ended his career due to differences with coach Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Coaching career

In March 2010 Copado became the new sporting director of SpVgg Unterhaching. After long-term criticism of his work, he largely withdrew from the club's operational business a year later, but Copado continued to work as a youth coach for SpVgg. On March 20, 2014, Copado became assistant coach of the professional team under the new head coach Christian Ziege . When he surprisingly resigned on March 25, 2015, Copado also resigned.

From August 15, 2015 until the end of the season, Copado worked as a player-coach for the district league club TSV Moosach and made his comeback in the district league east at the age of 41.

For the 2016/17 season he took over the coaching position at FC Gundelfingen , a newcomer to the Bayernliga Süd. After nine game days, he used an exit clause and went to Teutonia Watzenborn-Steinberg , who had been promoted from the Hessen League to the Regionalliga Südwest .

In March 2018, Copado successfully passed his coaching course and received the football instructor license from the DFB .
