Career
Club career
Beginnings
The striker came to Austria for DSG Klopeinersee in 1998 . He then moved to SAK Klagenfurt , and in 2002 to ASK Voitsberg . In 2004 he played on loan for SV Mattersburg , after which he was signed by LASK Linz . In his youth he ran for the Slovenian club NK Olimpija Ljubljana .
Litex Lovetsch and 1. FC Köln
After only one season at the Bulgarian club Litex Lovetsch Novakovič moved on August 29, 2006 to the then second division club 1. FC Cologne . On October 24, 2006, he scored his first goal for Cologne in the DFB Cup match against FC Schalke 04 . Novakovič scored ten goals for 1. FC Köln in the 2. Bundesliga in the 2006/07 season . In the 2007/08 season he came on 20 goals and thus close to the record of Lukas Podolski , who scored 24 goals in the 2004/05 season. After initial difficulties in dealing with the Cologne fans, the Slovene became more and more a crowd favorite.
In the 2007/08 season, alongside Patrick Helmes, he contributed to the promotion of 1. FC Köln to the Bundesliga . With his 20 goals this season he was the top scorer of the 2nd division in 2007/08 before Rob Friend . In his second division career he scored 30 goals in 58 games.
In his first season in the 1. Bundesliga (2008/09) he contributed to the league of 1. FC Köln with his 16 goals this season. Novakovič was voted Footballer of the Year in Slovenia in 2008. With 383 votes he prevailed against goalkeeper Samir Handanovič ( Udinese Calcio ), who came up with 364 votes. He was also temporarily the team captain of 1. FC Köln, but was relieved of this position after a dispute with coach Zvonimir Soldo .
On matchday 10 of the 2010/11 Bundesliga season , Novakovič scored all three goals in Cologne's 3-2 win against Hamburger SV ; this was his first hat trick for FC. In the same season he scored 17 goals - his personal record in the 1st Bundesliga - and finished third on the list of goalscorers.
Novakovič played a total of 176 competitive games for 1. FC Köln and scored 82 goals.
Adventure Japan
After the relegation of 1. FC Köln to the 2. Bundesliga (May 2012) and the subsequent upheaval, Novakovič no longer played a role, but still had a contract with FC until June 2014. He was released to look for a new club. On August 2, 2012 he was loaned to the Japanese first division club Ōmiya Ardija until the end of the year . He had a share in the team's relegation through his commitment and his goals.
After a short phase of individual training in Cologne, the loan was finally renewed on January 26, 2013 until December 31, 2013. After the renewed loan had expired, he agreed with FC on January 13, 2014 to terminate his contract immediately. A day later, his commitment through the J-League competitor Shimizu S-Pulse became known. On January 15, 2015 Novakovič moved the club again within Japan, this time he went to Nagoya Grampus . The employment relationship ended on January 1, 2016.
End of career at home
On February 18, 2016, he signed a contract until summer 2017 with NK Maribor, the record champions in his home country Slovenia. Here he ended his career at the age of 38 after his contract expired.
