Zlatko Zahovič (born February 1, 1971 in Maribor ) is a former Slovenian football player .

career

Zahovič started his career in the youth team of Kovinar Maribor . In 1989 he was discovered by the well-known Yugoslav soccer player Milko Djurovski (who was then doing his military service in Maribor). From 1989 to 1991 and from 1992 to 1993 he played for FK Partizan Belgrade , in the 1991/92 season he was loaned to FK Proleter Zrenjanin . In 1993 Zahovič moved to Vitória Guimarães , in 1996 he was signed by FC Porto . There he played until 1999. The following season Zlatko Zahovič was under contract with Olympiacos , the next for Valencia CF and from 2001 to 2005 he was active for Benfica Lisbon .

He was able to call up his best performances during his time at FC Porto . In 2001 he reached the Champions League final with FC Valencia , where his team lost to Bayern Munich on penalties . Zahovič was one of the unlucky shooters who failed because of Oliver Kahn .

Zahovič is notorious for his countless arguments and arguments, of which the argument with the Slovenian national coach Srečko Katanec became public during the 2002 World Cup. He left Olympiacos due to a dispute with management during the current season.

He also disagreed with the coach of his next club, Valencia CF , Héctor Cúper , because he believed that he was not offered enough prospects. However, he played the season for the Spanish club to the end and then moved to Benfica Lisbon . There he ended his active career.

Since the 2007/08 season he has been the sports director of the Slovenian first division club NK Maribor .

In 2002 Zlatko became the UNICEF ambassador for Slovenia .

National team

Zahovič made his debut in the Slovenian national team on November 7, 1992 in a friendly against Cyprus .

The Slovenian national team qualified for EURO 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium , where Zlatko Zahovič showed his skills and scored three of Slovenia's four goals.

Slovenia also qualified for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . However, Zahovič was sent home after the first game against Spain because he had a dispute with the then Slovenian national coach Srečko Katanec . Katanec quit his job as national coach immediately after the World Cup, which is why Zahovič celebrated his return to the national team. He played his last game for the Slovenian team on April 28, 2004 against Switzerland .

In total, Zlatko Zahovič completed 80 international matches for Slovenia, in which he scored 35 goals, making him the most successful Slovenian football player after Slovenia's independence.
