Ascent

Before the season, there were no clear favorites for promotion. The two relegated teams from the Bundesliga, 1. FC Nürnberg and Kickers Offenbach, were difficult to assess because of the great change in personnel. Last year's third and fourth MSV Duisburg and Hessen Kassel had to give up their top players. In fact, the question of promotion was completely open until the last game day. The exciting four-way battle for promotion to the Bundesliga characterized this season, in which no club was able to advance . On the last day of the match there was even a direct encounter between table leaders KSV Hessen Kassel and 1. FC Nürnberg, who was second in the table for the first time in the season, in the municipal stadium in Nuremberg . The third place in the table Hannover 96 against Hertha BSC and the fourth placed 1. FC Saarbrücken against Wattenscheid 09 had easy home games, which they both won. The Nuremberg team was only able to secure promotion with their 2-0 victory, and Kassel would have been promoted if they had a draw.

Thus, at the end of the season, Kassel was no longer on a promotion position for the first time since the 17th matchday and, like in the previous season, was only fourth. Nürnberg, on the other hand, still managed to get promoted, although the club even fell to last place during the preliminary round and several regular players (e.g. Rudolf Kargus ) were dismissed shortly after the "October Revolution" against coach Heinz Höher . However, these could be replaced by young players, including the later national players Hans Dorfner , Dieter Eckstein and Stefan Reuter . The promotion of Hannover 96 came unexpectedly, as coach Werner Biskup had to start the season with a squad of only 14 players. But around the veterans Franz Gerber and Karsten Surmann , as in Nuremberg, Art Nouveau dominated. Young players such as Michael Gue , Frank Hartmann , Bastian Hellberg , Maximilian Heidenreich and Matthias Kuhlmey dominated the 19 players .

descent

Bundesliga relegated Kickers Offenbach could not cope with the great change in personnel, in contrast to the relegated 1. FC Nürnberg. Additionally burdened with the deduction of two plus points for violating the DFB license conditions, the Offenbachers relegated at the end of the season. This made them the first club to be passed directly from the Bundesliga to the amateur camp in a sporting way. In addition, the newcomers St. Pauli and Bürstadt and Ulm descended. St. Pauli could hope to stay up until after the end of the season, as the DFB had withdrawn their license from Hertha BSC, but the decision was revised in the subsequent instance.

List of goalscorers

The best goalscorer of the season was Manfred Burgsmüller from SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen with 29 goals.
