biography

Goalkeeper at 1. FSV Mainz 05

Kneib's career in higher-class football began in 1970 with the then regional league team 1. FSV Mainz 05 . The goalkeeper, who had changed from the Rheinhessen club TSV Zornheim to the 05ers a year earlier, usually alternated with Wolfgang Orben, who was one year older. Kneib only became permanent goalkeeper in the 1973/74 season. In the summer of 1973 he was with the Mainz southwest champion, but failed in the Bundesliga promotion round. After the first Mainz second division year, Kneib moved in 1975 to the Hessian amateur division SV Wiesbaden .

Goalkeeper at Borussia Mönchengladbach

In 1976, Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach signed the goalkeeper, who immediately prevailed in the internal duel against Ulrich Sude and replaced the injured Wolfgang Kleff . In addition to the German championship that season, Kneib and Borussia also reached the final of the European Cup , which the Mönchengladbach team lost 3-1 on May 25, 1977 at the Olympic Stadium in Rome against the English champions FC Liverpool .

After Wolfgang Kleff had recovered from his injury in the course of the 1977/78 season, Kneib cleared the goal after ten Bundesliga games in order to replace Kleff as a regular goalkeeper again in time at the beginning of the 1978/79 season. In the victorious finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1978/79 season, Kneib guarded the case of coach Udo Lattek's team in both games against Red Star Belgrade (1-1, 1-0) and was accordingly UEFA Cup winner. With the change of coach from Udo Lattek to Jupp Heynckes on July 1, 1979, Kneib's competitor Kleff also changed clubs (to Hertha BSC ); Kneib remained Borussia's goalkeeper in the 1979/80 season. Under his former teammate Heynckes, the Mönchengladbacher reached the final of the UEFA Cup competition again that season, but with Kneib were just beaten there in two finals to the competitor from the Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt (3: 2, 0: 1).

Goalkeeper at Arminia Bielefeld

For the 1980/81 season, Kneib moved from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Arminia Bielefeld , where he succeeded Uli Stein, who had migrated to Hamburger SV . At Arminia he remained - apart from a season without a job, in which he was replaced by Olli Isoaho - until the Bundesliga relegation of the traditional East Westphalian club in 1985, the number 1 between the posts and completed 245 games in nine Bundesliga seasons. On the 23rd match day of the 1984/85 season in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt (2: 2) he took a penalty kick and defeated Frankfurt goalkeeper Jürgen Pahl with his shot , a goal scored also graces his Bundesliga statistics.

Even in the 2nd Bundesliga and even after Arminia was relegated to the third division in 1988, Kneib did not change the club and remained active in the first team of Bielefeld until the 1992/93 season (now 41 years old). In the second division season 1985/86 he converted on the 10th game day in the home win against Eintracht Braunschweig (7: 1) again a penalty. During the second division season 1986/87 Kneib came on the 15th match day at the home game against VfL Osnabrück to a use as a center forward, because the Arminia were injured not enough field players from the professional area available. He failed to score; the game was finally lost 3-2 after a 2-0 lead.

After the end of his active time as a professional footballer, Kneib worked in the back office of BD Bielefeld of Württembergische Versicherung AG.
