The 1978/79 UEFA Cup was the 8th edition of the competition and was won by Borussia Mönchengladbach . Thus, the team was successful in the third final for the second time after 1974/75 .
For the first time, three clubs qualified directly from the GDR Oberliga. Austria and Switzerland each provided two participants.
