Vladimir Petrović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Владимир Петровић ; born July 1, 1955 in Belgrade , Yugoslavia ), also called Pižon , is a former Yugoslav football player and coached the Serbian national team from September 2010 to October 2011 .

Career as a player

In the club

Petrović began his career as a professional footballer in 1972 at the age of 17 with his hometown club Red Star Belgrade , which was the dominant club in the Yugoslav league at the time. In his very first season, the midfielder became a regular player and also scored his first two goals. At the same time, Petrović made his European debut and reached the third round with a Red Star in the UEFA Cup . In the end there was the championship title. Petrović was able to confirm his status as a regular player in the following two years, which went without a title for Red Star, except for the 1973 league championship cup. But there were highlights in the European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup , where Liverpool FC in 1973/74 and Real Madrid in 1974/75 were eliminated.

In the seasons from 1975 to 1977 Petrović was then little used and scored only one goal in two seasons. In the three previous seasons he had scored a total of 14 times. In 1976/77 he was able to win at least his second championship title with Red Star. However, the year 1977/1978 brought Petrović back a place in the team and with nine goals the most successful round of his entire career in this regard. The club then set another international exclamation mark in the next season with their entry into the final of the UEFA Cup, which, however , had to be surrendered 1: 1 and 0: 1 against Borussia Mönchengladbach .

The following three seasons were supposed to be the last of Petrović in the red star jersey, but nevertheless he experienced another titled time with his club. In 1980 and 1981 they were again Yugoslav national champions, in 1982 the first national cup victory in Petrović's career followed. After ten and a half years in his home country, the midfielder decided to move to Western Europe in the winter of 1982/83. He had played a total of 257 league games for Red Star, marked 49 hits and received the nickname Pižon. He is still considered to be one of the most important players in the club's history.

In January 1983, Petrović signed a contract with English club Arsenal . Although he played 13 games in the second half of the second half of the season for the tenth of the English first division and scored two goals, the Serb was returned to Royal Antwerp in Belgium in the summer . There he was able to win a place in the first team and netted seven times in his first season. After two years he moved on to Stade Brest in France . There, too, he made the leap to high-performance immediately and in 1986 decided to move back to Belgium, where he signed a contract with Standard Liège . The season with tenth place in the league was not very successful for the club, but the Serb was also able to prevail here.

At the age of 32, Petrović decided to make one last club change, which led him back to France to second division AS Nancy . However, Nancy could not manage the direct resurgence with the Serbian midfielder either. In the summer of 1988 Vladimir Petrović finally ended his active career, in which he had completed a total of 417 league games and scored 72 league goals.

National team

On September 26, 1973 Petrović made his debut in the Yugoslav national team in a 1-1 draw against Hungary . But he didn't score his first goal against Romania until 1978 . With the Yugoslavs he took part in two soccer world championships : 1974 in Germany he made two appearances in the group stage, in 1982 in Spain he scored the 1-0 winner against Honduras , but he too was able to make the preliminary round after a 1: 2 against the hosts and a 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland . His international career ended when he moved to England in 1983, and in October 1982 against Norway (1: 3) he made his last international game. In a total of 34 missions for Yugoslavia, he had marked five hits.

Career as a coach

Just two years after the end of his career as an active player, Petrović became assistant coach at his home club Red Star Belgrade , with which he won the European Cup in 1991 and thus celebrated the greatest success in the club's history. In addition, two Yugoslav championship titles and a Red Star Cup victory fell during this time. His first position as head coach was the second division FK Bor in 1994/95 .

In July 1996 Petrović took over the coaching position at Red Star, but was dismissed in August 1997 due to unsuccessfulness. In the European Cup Winners' Cup he had previously defeated 1. FC Kaiserslautern 0-1 and 4-0. After a long period of unemployment, he was employed again by FK Bor in January 1999, where he only stayed until September.

In July 2002 Petrović was the national coach of the U-21 team of the now independent Serbia-Montenegro , until he was hired in 2004 as coach of the Serbian first division club Vojvodina Novi Sad . After only half a year, however, he was also released here. In mid-2005, the Serbs moved to Dalian Shide in China . With the defending champion in the championship, he reached fifth place. In September 2007 he took over the Chinese national soccer team . After being eliminated in World Cup qualification, he was relieved of his duties in 2008. In 2009 he returned to Red Star Belgrade, but was left again the following March. After several months at FC Timișoara in Romania, he coached Serbia's national team for the second time in his career from 2010. After leaving the European Championship qualification in 2011, he also lost this job again. On February 21, 2013, the Iraqi Football Association announced that Petrović would take over the country's national team .
