al-Ittihad al-ʿiraqi li-kurat al-qadam ( Arabic الاتحاد العراقي لكرة القدم, DMG al-ittiḥād al-ʿirāqī li-kurat al-qadam ; English Iraq Football Association , IFA) is the football association of Iraq . The IFA organizes all national teams in the country, as well as the Iraqi football championship .

history

The Iraqi Football Association was founded on October 8, 1948 by the merger of 14 teams. Obaid Abdallah became the first president. On June 23, 1950, the association became a member of FIFA , and in 1971 it joined the Asian Football Association (AFC). The association has been a member of the Arab Football Union (UAFA) since 1974 and of the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) since 2000 .

In 1985, Udai Hussein , Saddam Hussein's eldest son, became president of the Iraqi Football Association. After the fall of Saddam in 2003, it became known that football players were tortured after defeat. After the end of the dictatorship, the former national player Hussain Said was elected president of the association in 2004.

In November 2009, the association was dissolved by the National Olympic Committee and the headquarters in Baghdad were occupied by government forces. As a result, FIFA ruled Iraq on November 20th. The suspension was only lifted on March 19, 2010. The dissolution of the association had previously been reversed.

In July 2010 there was another crisis around the country's football association. Only 25 of the 71 MPs appeared in Erbil for the presidium elections, while the others met in Baghdad. FIFA threatened the country again with expulsion, but later extended the term of office of the current association for another year.

On July 13, 2011, the previous President Hussain Said resigned from his office. Najih Hamoud was elected as the new president in the presidium elections on July 18 . In 2014, Abd al-Chaliq Masʿud took over his post.
