The Japan Football Association ( Japanese 日本 サ ッ カ ー 協会 , Nihon Sakkā Kyōkai ) or JFA for short is the Japanese football association that is responsible for organizing football competitions in Japan . In addition to the national team, the JFA is also responsible for club competitions.

The association was founded in 1921 as Greater Japan Football Association ( 大 日本 蹴 球 協会 Dai-Nippon Shūkyū Kyōkai , German "Greater Japan Football Association") and joined FIFA in 1929 . In 1945 the association was renamed the Japan Football Association.

The JFA uses the Yatagarasu as a symbol , a mythical raven who is said to have led Emperor Jimmu to today's Kumano Nachi-Taisha .

Football is one of the most popular sports in Japan and the national team has qualified for a number of World Cups.
