The Vietnam Football Federation (Liên Đoàn Bóng Đá Việt Nam (VFF)) is the football association in Vietnam . Founded in 1962, the association has been a member of both FIFA and the AFC since 1964 . The association is part of the FIFA Goal project and the AFC Vision project of the Asian association.

Due to the colonization of Vietnam and the Vietnam War , football took a different development in the country. Football arrived in what was then Cochinchina as early as 1896 . The predecessor of today's association, the Vietnamese Department of Football, was founded at the beginning of the 20th century . Then there was the French Department of Football . In 1960 the Vietnam Football Association was founded in the north of the country. The first president was the former soccer star Hà Đăng Ấn . An association was also founded in the south of the country. The national team of the Republic of Vietnam was one of the best on the continent at the time. The greatest successes were a fourth place each at the AFC Cup in 1956 and 1960. In 1989, as part of the Đổi mới reforms, the association was re-established under the name Vietnam Football Federation . From 1976 to 1989 the association did not take part in any international competition. Friendlies only took place against also communist countries. The association's latest major success was winning the ASEAN football championship in 2008 . After the first and second leg they defeated arch rivals Thailand . The sporting goods manufacturer Nike has been the association's official supplier since 2009 . The contract runs for five years.

After winning the ASEAN soccer championship in 2008, the competition was held in Indonesia and Vietnam in 2010. As co-hosts, the Vietnamese team reached the semi-finals, in which they lost 2-0 to the eventual ASEAN champions Malaysia .

Vietnamese championship

Main article: V-League

The soccer championship in Vietnam is the most important national title. The men's championship has been played in a national championship since 1980. The first master was Tong cuc Duong sat . The record champion is Thể Công with five titles won. The current title holder is the Becamex Bình Dương association . 14 teams are currently participating in the first division. There are a total of three senior leagues for men in Vietnam. The women's championship has been held since 2001. The reigning champion and record winner is the Ha Noi team . The championship will be held with a total of six teams.

Vietnamese cup

Main article: Vietnamese Cup

The Vietnamese Cup is the oldest cup competition in Vietnam and has been held since 1992. It is organized annually by the VFF and is the most important title in national club football after winning the championship. The winner of the competition will be determined according to the knockout system . The first winner of the cup competition was FC Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh . The defending champion is the current second division club Hà Nội ACB . The winner automatically qualifies for the AFC Cup .

Vietnamese Supercup

The Vietnamese Supercup has been held since 1999. In this competition, the reigning champions and cup winners compete against each other in just one game. The current winner of the cup is Becamex Bình Dương .

VTV-T & T Cup

The VTV-T & T Cup is an invitation tournament for men's national teams, of the national association VFF. It is held every year in the Mỹ Đình National Stadium. For the first time in 2004. The current winner of the tournament is the Thai national team .

Thanh Nien Cup

The Thanh Nien Cup was created in collaboration with the daily newspaper Thanh Nien . It is an invitation tournament for U-21 men's national teams. It has been held since 2007. The current winner is the U-21 national team of Iran.

National Futsal Championship

The men's national futsal championship was held for the first time in 2009. The championship is held with a total of nine teams. Each club plays against each other once. The champion of the first season was Thái Sơn Nam .

International competitions

Success at soccer world championships

The Vietnamese men's team as well as the women's team has never qualified for a soccer world championship.

Successes at the Olympic Games

The Vietnamese U-23 men's team as well as the U-23 women have never qualified for the Olympic Games .

Success at the soccer Asian championship

The Vietnamese Association has only participated in the Asian Championships three times with its men's team. In 1956 and 1960 they came fourth. However, the success was achieved by the South Vietnamese soccer team. In 2007 it was the first to take part in the final round as an association. There the quarter-finals could be reached. The women's team has qualified for every finals since 1999, but never got beyond the preliminary round.

The men's team has regularly participated in ASEAN football championships since 1998. The greatest success came in 2008. After the two legs, they defeated their arch-rivals Thailand in the final .
