overview
In 1996 and 2000 Oman won the U-17 soccer championship and took part in the U-17 soccer world championship in Ecuador in 1995 . They finished fourth in this tournament. In this tournament, Mohamed Al Kathiri was voted MVP of the tournament and received the golden ball for most goals in the tournament (5 goals).
The senior national team, however, does not have many successes. It was only very late to join the professional sector. They reached the final round of the Asian Cup in 2004 , but failed in the preliminary round. In 2007 they qualified again, but dropped out again in the group stage. In the Golf Cup they reached the final three times, but lost to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in 2004 and 2007 . In 2009, however, they won the final as hosts against Saudi Arabia .
Oman has a total of 43 teams divided into three leagues: the first division Oman Professional League has fourteen clubs, the second also has 14 and the third consists of 15 teams.
