Football Association of Singapore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is the official Singapore football association .

history

The Football Association of Singapore comes from its predecessor, the Singapore Amateur Footbal Association (SAFA), which was founded on August 28, 1892, supposedly the oldest football association in Asia. The demand for soccer games in Singapore led to the creation of the Singapore Football League in 1904 , which was organized and controlled by the SAFA and existed in parallel with other leagues such as the Government Services League or the Business Houses League. While the Singaporean football landscape was dominated by Europeans until the 1920s, the establishment of the Singapore Chinese Football Association and the Singapore Malaysian Football Association bear witness to a turnaround. In 1952, the SAFA adopted the current name "Football Association of Singapore". In the post-war period, the FAS tried to prevent the local football league from bleeding out in favor of the Malaysia Cup , which led to a reorganization of the National Football League in 1975, during which the more than 100 local football teams were reduced to 30 teams. Despite the subsequent revitalization of the local football scene, the FAS decided to leave the Malaysia Cup in 1995 and concentrate on the newly founded S.League . This decision was supported by the creation of two additional football institutions - the National Football Academy and the Foreign Talent Scheme.

The Football Association of Singapore is governed by the Football Association of Singapore Council, elected for two years, led by President Zainudin Nordin and Secretary General Winston Lee. The council consists of 25 people, including a three-person presidium, two-person general secretariat and advisory board, a treasurer and 17 other members.
