The Football Federation Australia is the Australian umbrella organization for the country's nine regional football associations .
history
Early years
The history of the FFA goes back to 1921. The Australian Soccer Association (ASA) was founded in Sydney this year . However, this association was excluded from FIFA in 1960. The Australian Soccer Federation (ASF) was founded in 1961 . But this association was also banned from FIFA as FIFA continued to insist that the ARSP pay outstanding fines. In 1963, Australia was resumed by FIFA after fines were reduced and paid. Australia initially tried to become a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). However, this was rejected, and so the ASF joined forces with New Zealand in 1966 to form the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).
New beginning
After the collapse of the previous umbrella organization Soccer Australia , the Australian government launched an independent investigation, the so-called Crawford Report . The results of the commission were rejected by the Board of Directors of Soccer Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport threatened to stop funding Soccer Australia unless Soccer Australia implemented the Crawford Commission's set of measures. The Board of Directors resigned as a whole.
The commission recommended, among other things, the re-establishment of the governing body as the Australia Soccer Association with an interim board of directors led by prominent businessman Frank Lowy . In 2005 the ASA changed its name to Football Federation Australia in order to adapt to the international usage of the term "football", to prefer it to "soccer" and to distance itself from the mistakes of the old National Soccer League and Soccer Australia.
On January 1, 2006, the FFA moved from the Oceania Football Confederation to the Asian Football Confederation . This process had already been unanimously approved by the AFC Executive Committee on March 23, 2005 and confirmed by the OFC on April 17. The FIFA Executive Committee approved this operation on June 29th. The FFA hopes that membership of the AFC will improve the quality of Australian football and give the national team better chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
On March 27, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lack of income from broadcasting fees , sponsorship, ticket sales and government funding , the FFA had to temporarily send 70 percent of its employees home to reduce costs. Three days earlier, the A-League was suspended until further notice due to government pressure.
