Imperial Cup
The Imperial Cup ( Japanese 天皇 杯 , Tennōhai ; complete: 天皇 杯 全 日本 サ ッ カ ー 選手 権 大会 , Tennō-hai Zen-Nihon Sakkā Senshuken Taikai ) is the national cup competition for Japanese men's soccer teams . It has been held since 1921, making it not only older than any other national competition for "non-traditional Japanese sports" (such as sumo ), but also one of the oldest football competitions in Asia . Until the 1960s, the trophy, which is donated by the Japanese emperor , was shaped by university teams , after which it was dominated by the works teams of large Japanese corporations. Since the founding of the Japanese professional league J. League in 1992, professional teams have always been in the final. The Emperor's Cup is the second most important title in Japan after the championship and qualifies for participation in the AFC Champions League .
The counterpart in women's football is the Empress Cup ( 皇后 杯 全 日本 女子 サ ッ カ ー 選手 権 大会 , Kōgō-hai Zen-Nihon Joshi Sakkā Senshuken Taikai ).
All teams from the top two professional leagues ( J1 , J2 ) and some of the J3 leagues below , the semi-professional Japan Football League and the nine regional leagues , as well as some university teams, are eligible to participate in the Imperial Cup, the final of which has been taking place in the Tokyo Olympic Stadium since 1967 . A total of 80 teams took part in the 2004 Kaiser Cup, with the 16 first division clubs having byes up to the round of 32. The winner was Tokyo Verdy , who beat Júbilo Iwata 2-1 in the final .
There is often confusion in the name of the title, as the cup final of a season is traditionally held on New Year's Day of the following year. For example, Tokyo Verdy is sometimes referred to as the 2004 Cup Winners and sometimes the 2005 Cup Winners. Because of this, participation in the AFC Champions League is also delayed: Jubilo Iwata, for example, took part in the 2005 Champions League as the winner of the final on January 1, 2004.
Similar to Germany, where Viennese teams were also able to enter the DFB Cup winners list during the Third Reich , the list of Japanese cup winners includes a Korean team: in 1935, during the Japanese occupation of Korea , Zen- Keijō Shūkyūdan won ("Football club total Keijō (Seoul)" or Korean: Gyeongseong FC ) the tournament.
