Life

Cooper studied musicology and organ at Oxford , received his Masters in 1973 and PhD in 1974. After teaching at St Andrews University , he went to Aberdeen University . Since 1990 he has been a professor at the University of Manchester .

His research interests are in English baroque music and Ludwig van Beethoven . He is editor and author of the Beethoven Compendium (1991). This standard work on Beethoven research has now been translated into French, German and Japanese.

The premiere of his reconstruction of the first movement of Beethoven's 10th Symphony in the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1988 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Walter Weller caused a sensation . The London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Wyn Morris has now also recorded the Beethoven fragment.

In addition, he has reconstructed the long-lost slow movement of Beethoven's String Quartet in G major op. 18 No. 2 , which the Quatuor Danel premiered in Manchester in September 2011.

Cooper also rediscovered 17th century French spinet music.
