Wyn Morris

Wyn Morris (born February 14, 1929 in Trellech , † February 23, 2010 ) was a Welsh conductor and choirmaster .

Life

Morris studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music , at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Igor Markewitsch and received the Kussewizki Prize in Tanglewood . In 1965 he founded the Symphonica of London , with which he realized many of his projects in concert life and on recordings. From 1968 to 1970 he headed the Royal Choral Society , and from 1969 to 1974 the Huddersfield Choral Society . He also worked regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra .

Morris was regarded as a specialist in the works of Gustav Mahler , whose symphonies he recorded almost entirely on LP in the 1960s and 1970s as one of the first conductors. He published the first recordings of Mahler's Das klagende Lied (1967) and Deryck Cooke's second version of Mahler's completed 10th Symphony (1972). He also recorded Barry Cooper's completion of Ludwig van Beethoven's 10th Symphony in 1988 on CD.
