Augustine Kiprono Choge (born January 21, 1987 in Kipsigak near Kapsabet ) is a Kenyan middle and long distance runner .

Life

His running talent was discovered at the age of 14, and in 2003 he made his first international appearance at the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne , where he finished fourth in the junior race. In the same year he became youth world champion in the 3000 meter run . In 2004 he won the title in the 5000-meter run at the Junior World Championships and improved over 3000 meters to 7: 36.82 min and over 5000 meters to 12: 57.01 min.

In 2005, Choge won the junior races of the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier and set the current junior world record over 3000 meters with 7: 28.78 min. Shortly nominated for the 1,500 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005, but failed there in the preliminary run. In 2006 he won gold over 5000 meters at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 12: 56.41 minutes and defeated local hero Craig Mottram in a sprint. Shortly thereafter, he was seventh on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka .

In 2007 and 2008 he focused on the shorter distances and was tenth over 1500 meters at the Olympic Games in Beijing . At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, he finished fifth over the same distance.

On September 4th, 2009 he was part of a Kenyan quartet ( William Biwott Tanui , Gideon Gathimba , Geoffrey Kipkoech Rono , Choge), which in Brussels set the 32-year-old world record of the Germans Karl Fleschen , Thomas Wessinghage , Harald Hudak and Michael Lederer broke in the 4 x 1,500 meter relay race .

In 2012, Choge won silver over 3000 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul .
