Branislav "Branko" Stanković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Бранислав "Бранко" Станковић , born October 31, 1921 in Sarajevo ; † February 20, 2002 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav football player and coach . Both as a player and as a coach, he is one of the most important personalities of Red Star Belgrade in particular and for Yugoslav football in general. With the Red Star, he was national champion four times as a player and two times as a coach. He also led the club in the 1978/79 season to the final of the UEFA Cup . Because of his style of play, which was described in Yugoslav football circles as "elegant" and "superior", he was called an ambassador ("ambassador" or "consul") by fans and teammates during player times . Another nickname was Stane , which was derived from his last name. He worked part of his coaching career in Turkey and during this time led both Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul to the Turkish Championship , making him the second coach after Tomislav Kaloperović to win this title with two different teams. He also managed to win almost all competitions in Turkish football. As a coach, he was known and feared for his strict and authoritarian style. That is why he became known in his Yugoslav homeland and later also in Turkey as the “dictator of football”.

Player career

society

Stanković went through the youth department of FK Slavija Sarajevo and was included here in 1939 in the squad of the first team. After this club was closed after the outbreak of World War II , Stanković moved to OFK Belgrade . Due to the war, only a very limited league operation took place. Stanković 'team took part in the Serbian Football League (1940-1944) and decided the championship for themselves in the 1942/43 and 1943/44 seasons.

With the end of the world war, Yugoslav football had to be reorganized. In order to be able to continue with the league system, all the states that made up the new Yugoslavia organized a selection team and then played against each other in the 1st Yugoslav soccer league . Stanković played for the Serbian selection and won the championship of the 1945 season with this team.

After the 1st Yugoslav soccer league was supposed to resume regular play with clubs in 1946, Stanković was obliged by the newly founded club FK Red Star Belgrade , which was only founded in 1945 . At this club he was in the founding squad, established himself straight away as a regular player and ended with him the first season as third in the table. After Stanković 'team had finished 5th in the table in the 1947/48 season , they played in the following two seasons for the championship, but was only runner-up both times. In the Yugoslav Cup , the team succeeded in winning the cup in the seasons 1947/48 and 1948/49 . Finally, in the 1951 season, the first championship title was won. Until the summer of 1958, Stanković won the Yugoslav championship two more times and the Yugoslav Cup once.

In 1958 he ended his playing career after 195 league appearances and 14 goals for Red Star. He played a total of 495 official games for this club and scored 36 goals. According to the Yugoslav trade press, he developed a new type of defender. His style of play was then imitated by other well-known Yugoslav players such as Milovan Đorić , Fahrudin Jusufi , Petar Krivokuća .

National team

Stanković was nominated in the first international match of the Yugoslav national team after the end of World War II. In the game against Czechoslovakia he played from the start and made his international debut. From then on he was one of the most consistent players for a decade and played almost all of Yugoslavia's international matches during this time.

With the Yugoslav selection he took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics and made it to the tournament finals with her. The tournament host Great Britain was beaten 3-1 in the semifinals. In the final, Stanković's team met Sweden , lost 3: 1 and became silver medalists. He himself completed all four tournament encounters and scored his first international goal in the first game played against the Luxembourg national team .

Two years later he took part in the 1950 World Cup with Yugoslavia . With his team he finished second in Group 1 behind Brazil and was eliminated from the tournament.

1952 Stanković qualified again with Yugoslavia for the Summer Olympics . In the first encounter, the preliminary round against India , Stanković's team won 10: 1 and thus achieved the highest victory in the association's history. The tournament finals were also reached with this Olympic participation. This time the team played against Hungary , which at that time dominated world football with the team known as the Golden Elf . After Stanković's team was able to keep the 0-0 for a long time, they lost 2-0 with conceded goals in the last 25 minutes and became silver medalists again. This time too, Stanković completed all of his team's tournament encounters.

Two years later he played for Yugoslavia in the 1954 World Cup and was again in a group with Brazil. This time his team finished first in front of the South Americans and made it to the quarterfinals. Here Yugoslavia lost 2-0 to the eventual winner Germany .

After the 1954 World Cup, Stanković played for the Yugoslav team for two years and played his last international match on November 28, 1956 against the English team . During his national team career , he and his long-time teammate Stjepan Bobek topped the list of players with the most international appearances for the Yugoslav national soccer team . At the end of his career, he was with 61 internationals behind Bobek, who came on 63 appearances, the player with the second most international appearances for Yugoslavia. Both were not overtaken until 1961 by Branko Zebec and later by others. Stanković is currently in 6th place in the list.

He scored three goals and two own goals in his 61 international matches and was captain's armband in seven games.

Coaching career

First coaching stations

Stanković attended after the end of his playing career a sports school and graduated with a coaching diploma. He then started his coaching career in 1960 by starting to look after the club FK Željezničar Sarajevo as head coach. At the end of the season, he left this club again, having previously finished the table in 6th place with this.

For the 1963/64 season he took over the second division club NK Olimpija Ljubljana and looked after them for one season.

First championship as a coach

In the summer of 1964 he was hired as a new coach at FK Vojvodina Novi Sad . After he had finished the first season with this club in 9th place in the table, he played for the championship in the second season, the 1965/66 season . He finally led this club confidently with an 8-point lead to the first championship in the club's history and thus attracted attention for the first time as a coach. This achievement led him to also work as an assistant coach for the Yugoslav national team in 1966 . In the 1966/67 season he finished the league with his club in 4th place in the table, but made it to the quarter-finals in the 1966/67 European Cup and was eliminated here against the eventual tournament winner Celtic Glasgow after a total of 1: 2 out.

Greece and Portugal

From that year Stanković began to continue his career abroad and was the first to take on the position of head coach at the Greek club and reigning Greek champions AEK Athens . After he was able to reach sixth place in the table in his first season, he was able to run his team in the 1969/70 season behind arch-rivals Panathinaikos Athens . Finally, he was able to win the Greek championship with his team in the 1970/71 season.

After his club had no chance in the championship in the 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons, he took over the league rivals Aris Thessaloniki in the 1973/74 season . With this club he finished the season in 3rd place in the table.

In the summer of 1974 he left Greece and continued his career in Portugal . Here he took over FC Porto . He led this club to the runner- up in the 1974/75 season and thus to the best placement for six years. Despite this good ranking, the collaboration was not continued.

For the 1975/76 season he returned to Greece and was the head coach of PAOK Thessaloniki , the arch-rival of his former club Aris Thessaloniki. After he could only reach the 3rd place with this club, the reigning Greek champions, he left this club after one season.

Glorious time at FK Red Star Belgrade

In the summer of 1977 he returned to Yugoslavia and took over FK Vojvodina Novi Sad for the second time. After just one season he took over FK Red Star Belgrade , the club with which he already achieved great success as a player. In its first season, the successful club only led to 3rd place in the table, but caused a big surprise in the 1979/80 UEFA Cup . With his club, he made it to the UEFA Cup final and met the German club Borussia Mönchengladbach here . After two hard-fought games, his team was left behind against Borussia. In the seasons 1979/80 and 1980/81 he dominated the Yugoslav football with his club and was twice champion with a large point advantage. During these seasons the round of 16 of the 1979/80 UEFA Cup and the quarter-finals of the 1980/81 European Cup were reached. In 1982 his work at Red Star Belgrade came to an end.

Turkey

Already in the last days of the 1981/82 season he was traded as coach for the next season at the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The club, otherwise spoiled for success, had only played for the Turkish championship in two seasons in the last four years and did not achieve relegation in the 1980/81 season until the last match day. In order to re-establish the club at the top of the table, the club president Ali Şen tried to hire a strict foreign coach. After the German coach Friedel Rausch was dismissed in April 1982 and replaced on an interim basis by Yılmaz Yücetürk , Stanković was named by the club as a shortlisted coach. He was presented as a very strict coach and mentioned that he was known as the dictator of football in his Yugoslav homeland . After these developments, the club announced that Stanković would come to Turkey in the first week of May, sign a contract and determine the players to be signed. After all, he didn't travel to Istanbul until the end of May and signed a contract with Fenerbahçe. Stanković later said that he had a long-standing friendship with Ali Şen and that he had only taken over Fenerbahçe because he had given Şen his word about it years ago. He attended team training on the same day and informed his future players that he expected them to be the first discipline. He then stayed in Istanbul for a few days and watched the team during the regular season, trying to get an idea of each player.

On July 10, 1982 he came to Turkey and began his service here with the start of the pre-season preparatory camp. Already in his first training session, he arranged for the interpreter Erman, who appeared too late for training, to receive a fine of one month's salary as a punishment for being late. From day one, Stanković subjected the team to an unusually strict and grueling training program. As a result, after the first training session, some players were injured and / or began to complain about the harsh training conditions. So some players like Bahtiyar Yorulmaz started to complain, who then suspended Stanković from the squad.

Stanković restructured the team in the preparatory camp and during the season, suspended established players or arranged for their sale and added many young and new players to the team such as Hasan Özdemir , İsmail Kartal , Sedat Karaoğlu , Onur Kayador , Müjdat Yetkiner , Özcan Kızıltan , Selçuk Yula , Arif Kocabıyık , Osman Denizci , Mehmet Hacıoğlu and Cem Pamiroğlu . Players like Isa Ertürk , Bahtiyar Yorulmaz , Gungor Tekin and Fahruddin Zeynelovic were either sold or suspended from the squad. Stanković's measures quickly had an effect, so he and his players were able to emerge victorious in the pre-season TSYD Istanbul tournament and win the first title of the season. In the league, his team took over the championship lead from arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul on matchday 9 and finished the first half of the season with a two-point lead as autumn champions . In the second half of the season Stanković's team defended the championship lead against Galatasaray and Trabzonspor except for two games , but could not break away from these two pursuers. On matchday 32, the team met Galatasaray away and had a 4-point lead on Galatasaray and a 3-point lead on Trabzonspor before the game. With a win, the team would have eliminated Galatasaray from the championship fight and proven their lead over Trabzonspor. Fenerbahçe were able to compensate for Galatasaray's early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with a goal from Özcan Kızıltan, but went into the half-time break with 1: 3. Already in the third minute of the second half, Galatasaray extended his lead to 4: 1 and thereby endangered the Fenerbahçe championship, which was believed to be safe. From the 60th minute Stanković's team started a chase and turned the game to 4: 4 in the 71st minute, making for one of the most memorable games of the intercontinental derby . With this victory they brought Galatasaray out of the championship race and kept a 2-point lead over Trabzonspor. On June 12, 1983, the 33rd matchday, Stanković secured with Fenerbahçe by a 2-1 away win against Bursaspor one matchday before the end of the season, the 10th championship of the club's history. Trabzonspor did not get beyond a 1-1 draw against Zonguldakspor on the same match day . In addition to the Turkish championship, Stanković also prevailed in the Turkish Cup and made the Turkish double in his first season . In addition, the President's Cup , the Navy Cup and the Association Cup were won this season . This season went into the club annals as a season with five trophies .

After this successful first season, Stanković remained head coach in the 1983/84 season . In the league, his team delivered a head-to-head race for the Turkish championship with Trabzonspor, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş Istanbul . Stanković managed to take the lead in the first half of the season only on matchday three and was otherwise behind the alternating leaders Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. In the second half of the season, Stanković's team took over the championship lead on matchday 21 and only defended it for four days. Before the 26th matchday, Fenerbahçe occupied second place in the table with only one point behind Trabzonspor and was level on points with third-placed Galatasaray. Already in Saturday's game of the match, Galatasaray lost 3-0 to Orduspor and enabled Fenerbahçe to make a preliminary decision towards the championship by beating their other direct rivals Trabzonspor at home. In the hard-fought game, which was sold out with 26,000 spectators, both teams played a thrilling game. Trabzonspor emerged victorious from Hasan Şengün's 89th-minute header and increased the gap between them to three points. Stanković 'team could not benefit from some point losses Trabzonspors and awarded the championship to the rivals on the penultimate match day. The unsuccessful defense of the title was attributed to Stanković, as his team could get only one win and seven draws from the remaining eight games after the derby against Trabzonspor. In the Turkish Cup, Stanković and his team were eliminated in the semi-finals against arch rivals Beşiktaş. This season the President's Cup and, for the second time in a row, the Navy Cup was won. Even before the last match day, the club's management announced that they no longer wanted to work with Stanković in the next season.

After the departure from Fenerbahçe, Stanković was traded as the new coach at arch-rivals Beşiktaş. The two sides finally agreed to work together in mid-June 1986. Stanković signed a two-year contract and was to receive a salary of 50 million Turkish lira for this time . With his new club he took over the championship lead for the first time on the 6th matchday of the 1984/85 season , but awarded this to his former club Fenerbahçe after two matchdays. On the 12th matchday he regained the championship lead with Beşiktaş and this time awarded it to Trabzonspor after three matchdays. On the 17th matchday Stanković's team took over the first place in the table and thus secured the autumn championship. In the second half of the season Beşiktaş temporarily extended the table lead to four points, but lost the table lead on Matchday 31 due to the worse goal difference to Fenerbahçe. The remaining four game days they stayed tied with Fenerbahçe, but became runner-up at the end of the season due to the poorer goal difference. In the 1985/86 season , Stanković 'team delivered a head-to-head race for the championship with Galatasaray on matchday 14. After the league leadership was temporarily taken over on the 18th and 20th matchdays, the club stayed in second place behind Galatasaray until the 33rd matchday and replaced them on the 33rd matchday. The remaining game days Beşiktaş retained the lead over Galatasaray due to the better goal difference and ended the season as champions. This season he was also President Cup and Navy Cup winner with Beşiktaş .

After winning the championship with Beşiktaş, Stanković stated that he had received a better offer from another club and was therefore undecided about a contract extension. After the trade press speculated on a farewell to Stanković, the club's management announced that they were in agreement with Stanković and would sign a contract extension with him in the next few days. One day after this press release, however, Stanković signed a contract with Fenerbahçe and left Beşiktaş. Fenerbahçe had no chance in the championship in the last season, the season 1986/87. In the two-point rule valid at that time , she occupied a place in the table with a point difference of 14 points to the respective master. The club also missed the qualification for the European cup competitions.

Stanković started the season promisingly with his team and won the season's first title with the TSYD Istanbul Cup. In the league, however, Fenerbahçe started below expectations even under Stanković and lost connection to the top of the table early on. After the situation did not improve in the second half of the season, Stanković was questioned by some club officials and urged to resign. He refused and continued to coach. After it became clear that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for a European cup competition via the league placement this season, Stanković concentrated on the Turkish Cup competition. Here the team met in the quarter-finals against the then strong Samsunspor club . This club had won the last three games against Fenerbahçe and in two of these games Fenerbahçe with 0: 4 inflicted two of the bitterest defeats in the club's history. In the first game of the cup quarter-finals, Stanković's team Samsunspor lost 1-0 away. As a result, the club risked qualifying for the European cup competitions on the one hand and experienced the fourth defeat in a row against Samsunspor on the other. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played on April 1, 1987 in front of a home crowd. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg victory. As a result, Stanković missed the last chance to qualify for a European cup competition with Fenerbahçe. Since there were tumultuous situations and a scuffle after the game against Samsunspor, in which several Fenerbahçe players were involved, the Fenerbahçe players Müjdat Yetkiner , Abdülkerim Durmaz , Sedat Karaoğlu and Hasan Özdemir were given a three resp. four months. After these developments Stanković had to do without these players, who were among the most important performers of his team. After his team could not show any improvement in the league, there was speculation about a dismissal of Stanković. First, Fenerbahçe decided against a dismissal and for a restriction of Stanković 'powers. After the 1: 3 defeat against Sarıyer SK advised the club management and released Stanković before the 34th match day.

Return to Red Star Belgrade

After parting with Fenerbahçe, Stanković was acted as the new coach of Beşiktaş for the 1987/88 season. On the other hand, he said he did not want to stay in Turkey under any circumstances. Instead, he announced that he would return to his homeland. In August 1987 he told a newspaper that he had ended his coaching career. Despite this declaration, he negotiated with Beşiktaş in the summer of 1988 for a coaching activity for the 1988/89 season and prepared a transfer list with club president Süleyman Seba before signing the contract . After no cooperation with Beşiktaş had come about, Stanković took over his old club Red Star Belgrade during the season. With this he met in the European Cup of National Champions of the 1988/89 season in the 2nd round on AC Milan . After the first leg ended 1-1 in Milan, Stanković led the team 1-0 in the second leg in front of a home crowd and 100,000 spectators. The game was whistled in the 60th minute due to heavy fog and rescheduled for the following day. The repeat game was played again from the start. Red Star fell 0-1 after a goal by Marco van Basten and was then able to equalize with Dragan Stojković . After no decision had been made after extra time, Stanković's team was unhappy after a penalty shoot-out and missed a sensation against AC Milan, then dominating European football. Since Stanković with his team in the national league fell short of expectations and was recently eliminated in the cup, Red Star dismissed him at the end of the first half of the season.

Return to Turkey

For the second half of the 1988/98 season, Stanković accepted the offer from the Turkish first division club Karşıyaka SK and returned to Turkey after a year and a half. After the season ended in 11th place in the table, the club's management decided against continuing to work with Stanković. After this activity, Stanković ended his coaching career for good.

Trivia

  • In addition to his football career, Stanković also completed a degree in sports science and thus became a trained sports teacher.
  • Stanković was considered a very strict and authoritarian coach who demanded everything from his players. This led to some interesting incidents, especially in Turkey:
    • In the 1986/87 season Stanković fell out at Fenerbahçe immediately with his players, in which he expected them to change their diet explicitly according to his ideas. So he expected them to eat raw meat.
    • During a training session at Beşiktaş, Stanković got so upset about his players who failed to implement his tactical instructions and instead drank water over and over again that he knocked over the water container and forbade his players to drink water during the rest of the training session.
