İsmail Kartal (born June 15, 1961 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. With 235 first division appearances for Fenerbahçe, he is the player with the ninth most frequent Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. During his active time as a football player, he was known by the nickname Arap or Arap İsmail (German: İsmail the Arab ), a common Turkish name for dark-skinned people.

Player career

The first years and Sarıyer GK

Kartal was born in Anadolu Kavağı , a neighborhood in Istanbul's Beykoz district , as the son of a family from the Turkish Black Sea province of Rize . Here, like most of the children in his neighborhood, he played street football. He later joined the youth department of the local football club Sarıyer GK . In the late 1970s, Kartal was included in the professional team.

Gaziantepspor

For the 1981/82 season Kartal moved to the first division club Gaziantepspor . Here he quickly made the leap into the regular formation. In his second season he improved his performance, was called to the national team and became one of the most sought-after youngsters in the league. Since his club missed relegation in the summer of 1983, this Kartal could no longer hold.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

After the relegation of Gaziantepspor in the summer of 1983 Kartal moved to the traditional Istanbul club Fenerbahçe Istanbul .

In the blue and yellow he was not used by head coach Branko Stanković as a regular player, but came on 16 league appearances, of which he only played seven over the full length. At the end of the season, his club clearly awarded the Turkish championship to Trabzonspor and became runner-up. During the winter break of this season, Kartal and his team won the Navy Cup and the President's Cup at the end of the season . In the next season, Todor Veselinović took over from his compatriot Stanković as coach. Under this new coach, Kartal was immediately accepted into the regular team. Together with Müjdat Yetkiner , Cem Pamiroğlu , Erdoğan Arıca and Abdülkerim Durmaz , he formed the defense of his team in the 1984/85 season . Especially his interaction with Durmaz, with whom he also had a good friendship, was highlighted by the trade press. At the end of the season, the Turkish championship was won. Over the entire season, the team fought with Beşiktaş for the championship lead. On the third from last game day, Kartal's team met their direct championship rivals away from home. Both teams went into this encounter tied. At the end of the season, Kartal's club, tied with Beşiktaş, ended the season due to the better goal difference as champions. In addition, the titles in the President's Cup and the Navy Cup for the second time in a row were defended this season. With 44 appearances in competitive matches, Kartal became the second most appearances for Fenerbahçe this season, behind Müjdat Yetkiner. He experienced the most successful period of his career and established himself as a regular player in the Turkish national team .

Despite the championship won, the club management replaced Veselinović by the Hungarian Kálmán Mészöly . Under this coach, the team met the reigning French champions Girondins Bordeaux in the European Cup of the 1985/86 season . Against this club, which had reigning European champions like Alain Giresse and Patrick Battiston , Jean Tigana in its ranks and was French champion twice in a row, Fenerbahçe was treated as a blatant outsider and the club were given little chance of advancing. At that time, the relationship between Turkey and France was very tense because of the attacks by the Asala terrorist organization . Furthermore, the Turkish teams were eliminated without exception in the European club cup competitions in the first round. In the first game, played on September 1, 1985 in Bordeaux , Fenerbahçe created a big surprise and defeated Girondins 3-2 away. Kartal received praise from the Turkish and French press as part of the defense. In the second leg, Kartal's team earned a 0-0 draw and prevailed against Girondins. This advancement was celebrated as a great success in Turkish football at the time. In the second round, the team met IFK Göteborg . In the first away game, Fenerbahçe lost 4-0. Especially the goalkeeper Yaşar Duran and the defense around the defense chief Durmaz were described as the main responsible for this defeat. Since the defense was assigned a great complicity, Kartal also came under fire.

This season and the next, Kartal's team had no chance in the championship. In the two-point rule valid at that time , one occupied table positions that showed a point difference of far more than 14 points to the respective champions. In these seasons, the club also missed qualifying for the European cup competitions. After it became apparent in the 1986/87 season that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for any European cup competition via the league placement, the team focused on the Turkish Cup competition. Here the team met in the quarter-finals against the then strong Samsunspor club . This club had won the last three games against Fenerbahçe and in two of these games Fenerbahçe even with 0: 4 inflicted two of the bitterest defeats in the club's history. In the first game of the cup quarter-finals, Durmaz's team Samsunspor lost 1-0 away. As a result, the club risked qualifying for the European cup competitions on the one hand and experienced the fourth defeat in a row against Samsunspor. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played in front of a home crowd on April 1, 1987. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg win. Immediately after the final whistle there was a scuffle between players from both teams. The goalkeeper of Samsunspor, Fatih Uraz , had been too carefree and happy about the semi-finals that he caused the resentment of some Fenerbahçe players. This circumstance caused tumultuous situations on the field, in which Kartal took part, but in contrast to his teammates Müjdat Yetkiner, Sedat Karaoğlu , Hasan Özdemir and Abdülkerim Durmaz went unpunished. The following season, the club also fell short of expectations and again did not qualify for any European cup competition.

For the new season, Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the 1984/85 season , was committed. This coach took Yetkiner back into the team. In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . Furthermore, the club's management continued to invest in the team and signed Şenol Ustaömer , Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Turhan Sofuoğlu , Hasan Vezir , Hakan Tecimer and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. With this team Fenerbahçe played an outstanding season. The season ended ten points ahead of second-placed Galatasaray and won the Turkish championship again after four years. In addition, the team scored 103 goals over the entire season and thus earned a new goal record in the 1st Lig . This team went into the club annals as the championship team with 103 goals . Kartal came to 35 competitive appearances this season and played in defensive midfield and in defense. After this successful season, Fenerbahçe remained the next four seasons without significant success. Neither in the championship nor in the Turkish Cup succeeded in winning the title. The only bright spots were the Prime Minister's Cup in the 1992/93 season and the TSYD Istanbul Cup in the 1994/95 season . Kartal, together with his long-time teammate Yetkiner, was predicted the end of his career or his regular place before each season, but despite increasing competition both managed to fight for a regular place or to come to regular assignments.

After the last four seasons without a title, the Fenerbahçe leadership decided in the summer of 1993 to carry out a revision in the team squad. Several seasoned players were put on the list of graduates, including Kartal.

Denizlispor to Adanaspor

After Fenerbahçe explained to Kartal in the summer of 1993 that they no longer planned with him, the latter moved to the second division Denizlispor . At this club, he immediately established himself as a regular player and top performer. With twelve goals this season and several assists, he was significantly involved in the runner-up of his team and promotion to the 1st league. Despite this successful debut at Denizlispor, Kartal left this club after one season and moved to the second division Adanaspor for the coming season . At this club, Kartal failed to establish itself as a regular player. After he had only played seven league games here by the end of the season, he ended his career.

National team

Kartal's national team career began during his time at Gaziantepspor . Here he caught Coşkun Özarı , the head coach of the Turkish national team , and was nominated for the international squad in a friendly against Hungary . It was in this game that Kartal also made his international debut.

After this senior international, he was used in two games of the U-21 national team . He then played five more times for his country's A-selection until 1985.

He is one of the players who were part of the Turkish national team in two of the bitterest defeats. On 14 November 1984 the team lost the World Cup 1986 - qualification match at home to the English national team with 0: 8th Kartal was heavily criticized by the specialist press as part of the defense. His A international debut against the Hungarian selection was also one of Turkey's bitterest defeats.

Coaching career

Kartal started working as a coach a year after he ended his playing career. His first job was as a junior coach for Fenerbahçe. Just one year later he was promoted to assistant coach and assisted first the head coach Otto Barić and then Joachim Löw .

In November 2000 he started working for DÇ Karabükspor for the first time as head coach. From the summer of 2003, Kartal began working again for Fenerbahçe as a junior coach.

For the 2004/05 season Kartal took over the second division side Sivasspor . With this club, he quickly took the lead in the table and kept it sovereign until the end of the season. He ended the season with this club as a champion of the TFF 1st Lig and thus with the promotion to the Süper Lig . Thereby he helped the club to participate in the first division in the club's history. Despite this success, he left Sivasspor at the end of the season. After this job he worked for a number of second and third division clubs.

In the summer of 2010 he took over the position of assistant coach at Fenerbahçe again, assisting his former teammate Aykut Kocaman . In the 2010/11 season Kartal attracted negative attention when he insulted the opponents during the critical home game against Gaziantepspor with the following words: Do not play for others, but for yourself, you honorless ones . (Turkish: Başkası için değil, kendiniz için oynayın şerefsizler. ).

After Kartal had worked as Kocaman's assistant for three years, he assisted the new head coach Ersun Yanal from summer 2013 . In April 2014, Kartal announced that they wanted to leave Fenerbahçe at the end of the season and from now on work as head coach. After Yanal resigned from his coaching position at Fenerbahçe on August 9, 2014, Kartal was introduced by the club's board as Fenerbahçe's head coach on August 12, 2014.

After his departure from Fenerbahçe, Kartal trained successively for short periods the first division side Eskişehirspor and Gaziantepspor . In the summer of 2017 he was introduced as the new head coach at the second division club MKE Ankaragücü . He led this club at the end of the season as the master of the TFF 1st Lig in the Süper Lig. After differences of opinion with the club's management, he was dismissed in January 2019.
