Sedat Karaoğlu (born February 8, 1960 in Izmir ; † June 1, 2014 there ) was a Turkish football player . Through his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is associated with this club.

Player career

In the club

The beginnings of Karaoğlu's career are hardly documented. He played for the second division Aydınspor for an indefinite period . Here he was noticed by those responsible for the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul , who then signed him up in the summer of 1980. In the Istanbul team, Karaoğlu was used in 23 league games by trainer Friedel Rausch, despite his age of 19 . Although his club had one of the most unsuccessful seasons to date and played against relegation, Karaoğlu showed promising performances over the entire season and rose to become a national player. Fenerbahçe played against relegation until the end of the season and achieved relegation level on points with the last relegated only thanks to the better goal difference. After this disappointing season from the club's point of view, a revision was carried out in the squad under the direction of Rausch and several seasoned players were handed over. Instead, in addition to new purchases, the younger players were also established in the team. Karaoğlu was hardly used by Rausch at the beginning of this second season. To enable him match practice, his club loaned him to league rivals Göztepe Izmir from November 1981 to summer 1982 . For the 1982/83 season , Fenerbahçe hired the Yugoslav Branko Stanković as the new head coach. This coach kept Karaoğlu in the team squad and used him as a supplementary player in nine league games. Under this coach, the team increased their previous year's performance. In the Turkish championship they prevailed against their worst rival Trabzonspor and won this trophy again after five years. In addition, the team won the Turkish Cup this season, making it a Turkish double winner for the third time in the club's history . In the next season his team awarded the championship and the cup again to Trabzonspor. Karaoğlu increased his stakes to 15 league games. After the title was missed in the championship, the club management replaced Stanković by Todor Veselinović in the summer of 1984 . Fenerbahçe won the Turkish championship again under this coach in the 1984/85 season . Over the entire season, the team fought with Beşiktaş Istanbul for the championship lead. On the third to last game day, Karaoğlu's team met their direct championship rivals away. Both teams went into this encounter tied. At the end of the season, Fenerbahçe ended the season tied to Beşiktaş due to the better goal difference as champions. In addition, they won the President's Cup this season and the Navy Cup for the third time in a row . Karaoğlu came in this season to 22 competitive appearances, where he was substituted in or out of nine of these missions.

Despite the championship won, the club management replaced Veselinović by the Hungarian Kálmán Mészöly . This coach put Karaoğlu on the list of players to be loaned for the coming season after the pre-season preparation camp. Karaoğlu spent the 1985/86 season with league rivals Malatyaspor . For this club Karaoğlu completed 24 league appearances during one season. For the new season Karaoğlu returned to Fenerbahçe and was used by the new head coach Branko Stanković as a regular player. In this and the following season Karaoğlu's team had no chance in the championship. With the two-point rule valid at that time , one occupied table positions that showed a point difference of far more than 14 points to the respective champions. In these seasons, the club also missed qualifying for the European cup competitions. After it became apparent in the 1986/87 season that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for any European cup competition via the league placement, the team focused on the Turkish Cup competition. Here the team met in the quarter-finals against the then strong Samsunspor club . This club had won the last three games against Fenerbahçe and in two of these games Fenerbahçe even with 0: 4 inflicted two of the bitterest defeats in the club's history. Karaoğlu's team Samsunspor lost 1-0 away in the first game of the cup quarter-finals. As a result, the club risked qualifying for the European cup competitions on the one hand and experienced the fourth defeat in a row against Samsunspor. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played in front of a home crowd on April 1, 1987. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg victory. Immediately after the final whistle there was a scuffle between players from both teams. The goalkeeper of Samsunspor, Fatih Uraz , had been too carefree and happy about the semi-finals that he caused the resentment of some Fenerbahçe players. This circumstance caused tumultuous situations on the pitch. As a result, Karaoğlu and other teammates such as Müjdat Yetkiner , Abdülkerim Durmaz and Hasan Özdemir received an eight-month suspension from the national football association. The following season the club also fell short of expectations and did not qualify for any European cup competition. Karaoğlu completed all of his team's league games this season.

For the new season, Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the 1984/85 season , was hired. In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . Furthermore, the club's management continued to invest in the team and signed Şenol Ustaömer , Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Turhan Sofuoğlu , Hasan Vezir , Hakan Tecimer and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. With this team Fenerbahçe played an outstanding season. The season ended ten points ahead of second-placed Galatasaray and won the Turkish championship again after four years. In addition, the team scored 103 goals over the entire season and thus earned a new goal record in the 1st Lig . This team went into the club annals as the championship team with 103 goals . Karaoğlu only made six league appearances as a substitute and lost his regular place last year.

In the next season, 1989/90, Karaoğlu started at Fenerbahçe, but he moved to league rivals Samsunspor in October 1989 and left Fenerbahçe after about nine years. With Samsunspor, Karaoğlu missed relegation at the end of the season and was relegated to the 2nd Futbol Ligi with this club . In the 2nd Lig the championship of the league and thereby the direct return to the 1st Lig was achieved. Despite this success, Karaoğlu left the club in the summer of 1991 and instead switched to the second division Sökespor . After one season for this club, he moved on to the third division club Düzcespor for the next season . With this club he reached the championship of the 3rd Futbol Ligi and rose to the 2nd Lig. In the summer of 1994 he returned to his previous club Sökespor. For this club he played two seasons and then ended his career.

National team

Karaoğlu's national team career began during his time at Gaziantepspor. Here he was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish U-21 team and made his international debut against the Czechoslovak U-21 national team .

A year after his U-21 application, he was the Turkish national team coach Özkan Sümer in the squad of the Turkish national team nominated. After sitting on the bench in the game against Wales, he completed his first and only international match against Czechoslovakia in April 1981 .
