history

Founding of the association and the first years

Malatyaspor was founded in Malatya in 1966 and took part a year later in the second highest Turkish league, today's TFF 1. Lig , in the competition. At the end of the first season, the club rose to the third highest Turkish league, today's TFF 2nd Lig , from. After you had played in this league until the summer of 1973, you rose again through the championship won in the TFF 1st Lig . Here the club took part in the competition for the following four seasons, but mostly played against relegation. In the summer of 1977, the club finally rose again from the TFF 2nd Lig . For the 1980 season, the Turkish Football Association decided to limit Turkish professional football to two leagues and merged the TFF 2nd Lig and TFF 1st Lig leagues for the upcoming season . As a result, Malatyaspor played second class again.

First promotion to the Süper Lig and the most successful season

At the beginning of the 1980s, the patron Nurettin Soykan took over the highly indebted club and became club president. Within a few months he financed a completely new training ground out of his own pocket and built a new team consisting of seasoned players and young talents. In addition, the association was also supported by the fact that the then incumbent Prime Minister of Turkey, Turgut Özal , comes from the province of Malatya and supported it in all areas. For the 1982/83 season they hired many players from the Süper Lig and went into the season with the declared goal of the championship. This goal was missed and reached third place in the table at the end of the season. In order to achieve the goal of championship and thus promotion to the Süper Lig, investments were made again in the team. According to media reports, club president Soykan invested 15,000,000 Turkish lire in the team by October 1983. These investments have had an impact. Under the direction of head coach Nihat Atacan , Malatyaspor was first autumn champion and then sovereignly master of the TFF 1st Lig without a defeat . This was the first time in the club's history to participate in the highest Turkish league, the Süper Lig. At the end of the season, Malatyaspor was named the most successful team in the league by the Turkish Football Association and the coach Nihat Atacan the most successful coach of the season.

The preparations for the coming season began Malatyaspor weeks before the official end of the season immediately after winning the championship. The club tried in vain to sign well-known players from the three big clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . The commitments failed not because of the required amount, but rather because of the fact that none of the stars wanted to play in the province.

In the end, they made do with the players from the rest of the first division teams and brought in Malik Gençalp , Çetin Aslan , Eren Talu , Oktay Çevik and Cavit Kurucu . In the Süper Lig, the club played the first two seasons against relegation and consolidated its role in the third Süper Lig season with sixth place in the table. During the past three seasons, they have continuously built a powerful team. In the summer of 1985 Fenerbahçe signed the national player Sedat Karaoğlu , from Galatasaray the national player Metin Yıldız and from Gaziantepspor the shooting star Bünyamin Süral . At the beginning of the 1986/87 season, the reigning national goalkeeper Yaşar Duran , from Galatasaray the young star Adnan Esen . Fener signed the new coach Yılmaz Vural at the end of the season .

According to the directives of Vural, the club signed the national player Ceyhun Güray and the much-traded young star Ünal Karaman for the season 1987/88 . With this strengthened team, Malatyaspor established themselves at the top of the table early on. The team achieved surprising home wins against the so-called three greats of Turkish football, against the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. After a series of point losses, the team fell slightly from the top of the table and the coach Vural began to be more and more questioned. Immediately after the 7-2 home defeat by Adana Demirspor , Vural finally left the club and was replaced by Özkan Akbulut . This coach led the team back on the road to success. Under his leadership, the season ended with a 5-3 home win over Beşiktaş and with third place in the table, the best first division placement in the club's history was achieved.

Motivated by the third place in the table, the club continued to invest in the team for the upcoming season. So they signed the Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Roberto Gallo and the Brazilian international Serginho Chulapa . Nihat Atacan was hired again as coach. The season was rather disappointing for the club, so that they fell short of expectations. Atacan was sacked after a 6-0 defeat against Galatasaray after the 3rd match day and replaced by İsmail Tekin . Tekin, in turn, looked after the team for only eight game days and handed over his position to Özkan Akbulut. After losing 6-1 to Fenerbahçe under this coach, they also separated from this coach and replaced him with the German Jürgen Sundermann . At the end of the season Malatyaspor took a disappointing twelfth place in the table. The only bright spot of the season was the leadership in the Turkish Football Cup . Here you got to the semi-finals, where you met Fenerbahçe. The first leg in Istanbul was lost 0-1, the second leg in Malatya could be won 2-1. Nevertheless, the club was eliminated from the competition because of the away goals rule . This result was the best result in this competition to date. According to Sundermann's wishes, work was carried out on the team for the next season. So the German players Alf Fistler and Engelbert Buschmann were signed . The team also fell short of expectations in the 1989/90 season. Despite disappointing results, the club's management stuck to Sundermann for a long time. After a 4-0 home defeat on Matchday 13 against Galatasaray and an away defeat by Adana Demirspor on Matchday 14, Sunderman was finally sacked. He was followed by Ümit Turmuş . Even with this coach it was not possible to free himself from the relegation places, so Fethi Demircan was hired as head coach on matchday 24 . Demircan also failed to achieve the hoped-for increase in performance. Since the Süper Lig was to be reduced from 18 teams to 16 for the coming season, the last five teams had to be relegated at the end of the season instead of the usual last three. So the club rose with the reached 14th place in the table in the TFF 1st Lig . After the failure, the club's president Nurettin Soykan resigned and was replaced by Metin Kaya Çağlayan . This claimed that the immediate competitor in the relegation battle, Boluspor , had agreed with Adana Demirspor and had thus brought about the descent of Malatyaspors. The matter went to court and was ultimately unsuccessful. In January 1991, the resigned old President Nurettin Soykan was re-elected and immediately worked on direct resurgence. At the end of the season they were second in the table and missed direct promotion. During the past season and before that, there were repeated calls from the fan stand asking President Soykan to step down from office. Soykan resigned again, but emphasized that he was leaving the club free of debt.

Second promotion to the Süper Lig

After the departure of Soykan, Malatyaspor remained unsuccessful for a long time and played in the middle of the table in the TFF 1st Lig. At the end of the 2000/01 season, the club made it into the play-offs of the TFF 1st Lig prevailed here on penalties with 4-2 against Sakaryaspor . After twelve years of abstinence, she was able to participate in the Süper Lig again .

In the first Süper Lig season, the club safely managed to stay in the league. The subsequent 2002/03 season was very successful. The club had qualified for the UEFA Cup the previous season. In the first round he played against FC Basel from Switzerland . After losing the first leg 2-0 at home, the team surprised in the second leg and led 2-0 after 90 minutes. In extra time, FC Basel scored the decisive goal to make it 1: 2, which meant that Malatyaspor was eliminated. In the same season, Malatyaspor won the quarter-finals of Fortis Türkiye Kupası against Galatasaray Istanbul 2-1 and made it to the semi-finals, but failed there at the eventual cup winner Trabzonspor with 0-3. The season ended with 5th place in the Süper Lig.

Freefall

In the 2005/2006 season, Malatyaspor only reached 16th place in the Turkish Süper Lig and was relegated to the second-class bank Asya 1st Lig . The 2008/2009 season ended Malatyaspor in the last place in the table of the second highest league and rose to the TFF 2nd Lig (third highest division).

At the end of September 2012, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed a four-year transfer ban on Malatyaspor. The reason for this suspension is an unpaid player's salary to the Czech football player Jiří Mašek . This played in the 2005/06 season for Malatyaspor.

In the summer of 2012, the club was relegated to the Malatya 1. Amatoer Ligi , the sixth highest Turkish division. In this league, the team finished the qualifying round with a 13-point lead as the first in the table and qualified for the playoffs of the league. The playoffs ended the team, however, bottom of the table and thus missed promotion to dine Boelgesel Amatoer Lig . In the next season of the Malatya 1. Amatoer Ligi , the club started very badly and fought to stay in the league until the last day of the qualifying round. The table finished the team as penultimate and therefore had to play in a three play-out round against relegation.
