The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 2000/01 was the 38th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on August 15, 2000 with the 1st matchday of the qualifying round and ended on May 21, 2001 with the 18th matchday of the relegation round.
Competition mode
In the 2000/01 season, the second-highest division was played in three stages, as in the previous season. In the 1st stage, the league was played in a qualifying round (Turkish Kademe Grupları ) in five groups of ten teams each with home and away games. After the end of the 1st stage, the first two teams from all groups were included in a common group, the promotion round (Turkish Yükselme Grubu ), and played here for promotion to the 1st Lig . The remaining teams in the five groups of the qualifying round played in an unchanged group constellation now in a relegation round (Turkish Düşme Grupları ) for relegation to the 3rd Lig . Both the promotion round and the relegation round represented the 2nd stage and were played with two legs.
The teams in the first two places of the promotion round rose directly to the 1st Lig. While the points from the qualifying round were not taken into the promotion round, they were counted unchanged in the relegation round. The 3rd stage was carried out in the form of a play-off round. The teams ranked from three to five and all the promotion round group winners of all descent groups should in the knockout system play out the third and final intermediates.
Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. Up until the summer of 2001, professional football in Turkey consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-track Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the two-class five-track and two-stage Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-class, eight-track Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig .
The teams from the promotion round that reached neither the promotion nor the play-off participation were taken over for the coming season in the future second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi . The runners-up in all relegation groups also secured further participation in the second-highest division. With the exception of the play-off winner, who rose to the Süper Lig , all other play-off participants were transferred to the future second-highest division. The bottom of the table of all relegation groups relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig, which was the newly introduced fourth-highest professional league from the summer of 2001. The remaining teams of all relegation groups, the teams in the table positions three to seven, took part in the following season in the future third highest professional division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi , in the competition.
The first stage began with the start of the season on August 15, 1999 and ended with the winter break on December 29, 1999. The following second stage then started on January 22, 2000 and ended on May 21, 2000. The third and last stage, in which the play-offs were played, was played from May 26, 2000 to May 31, 2000.
At the beginning of the season, the remaining 38 teams from the previous season were the two relegated teams from the 1st Lig Altay Izmir , Göztepe Izmir , Vanspor and the ten promoted teams from the third-class 3rd Lig Cizrespor , Gümüşhane Doğanspor , Hacılar Erciyesspor , Türk Telekomspor , Ispartaspor , Yeni Turgutluspor , Öz Sahrayıceditspor , Kırklarelispor , Güngören Belediyespor and Akçaabat Sebatspor have been added.
