The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1988/89 was the 26th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on August 21, 1988 with the 1st game day and ended on May 14, 1989 with the 34th game day.

In the 1988/89 season the TFF 1. Lig was again divided into three groups as in the previous season, but in contrast to the previous season, in which there were two groups with 17 teams each and one group with 18 teams, the total number of teams increased by one . In the previous season, the Süper Lig was reduced by one team, so that instead of the usual three this time four relegated teams had to be assigned to the 1st Lig. As a result, the three groups were divided into two groups of 18 teams (Groups A and B) and one group of 17 teams (Group C). Thus a total of 53 teams in the three groups played for promotion to the Süper Lig or against relegation to the then third-class TFF 3rd Lig . The division of the teams into the respective groups was not taken over from the previous season, but redistributed.

Originally, it was intended that all three top players should be promoted directly to the higher Süper Lig. This number of promoters was then reduced to two at the end of the season. On January 19, 1989, the team of the first division team from Samsunspor traveled to the away game in Malatya . During the journey, the club bus collided with a truck, resulting in many dead and injured. As a result, Samsunspor withdrew from the game. The Turkish Football Association decided at the end of the season that Samsunspor should remain in the Süper Lig and that only two teams will be promoted from the TFF 1. Lig instead. The first two with the most points should move up.

It was also intended to form the league into three groups of 17 teams each at the end of the season. As a result, it was decided that the last four teams in both groups of 18 would be relegated and the last three in group of 17. For the total of eleven relegated teams, nine newcomers from the 3rd Lig, today's TFF 2nd Lig , should be added in the next season .

Beginning of the season are the remaining from the previous season 43 teams, the four relegated from the Süper Lig Denizlispor , Kocaelispor , Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Zonguldakspor and the nine climbers from the then third-rate TFF 3. Lig Giresunspor , Mardinspor , Nevşehirspor , Polatlıspor , Alanyaspor , AYVALIKGÜCÜ BELEDIYESPOR , Bursaspor B , Uzunköprüspor and Kartalspor have been added.

Gençlerbirliği Ankara reached the Group A championship several weeks before the official end of the season . In Group B , the reserve team Bursaspors , Bursaspor B reached the championship, but was not allowed to rise as the second team of a first division team. Instead of Bursaspor B the second-placed Bakırköyspor did not take the place of the possible promoter, so that only two teams rose this season. Zeytinburnuspor reached the Group C championship several weeks before the official end of the season . Since the Turkish Football Association had reduced the number of promoters from three to two during the season, the first two with the most points should now move up. Thus Gençlerbirliği rose and managed the direct resurgence. The second promoted, however, was Zeytinburnuspor, which rose for the first time in its club history in the top Turkish league. Bakırköyspor was denied promotion because of too few points. End of the season are selected from the group A , the teams Mardinspor , Bitlisspor , Kayserispor from which the group B , the teams Zonguldakspor , Sönmez Filamentspor , Yeni Afyonspor , Trabzonspor B and from the group C are the teams Babaeskispor , Çorluspor , Düzcespor , Uzunköprüspor (N) descended.

The top scorer of the entire league and Group C was Erhan from the South Anatolian representative Antalyaspor with 26 goals . In Group A , Levent Erköse from İskenderunspor was the top scorer with 22 goals , while in Group B Varol from Sönmez Filamentspor was the top scorer with 22 goals.
