The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1977/78 was the 15th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football . It was started on August 28, 1977 with the 1st game day and ended on May 28, 1978 with the 31st and final game day.

In the 1977/78 season, the TFF 1st Lig was divided into two groups, as in the previous season. In contrast to the previous season, the total number of teams was increased by one team, so that one group consisted of 17 teams ( red group ) and one of 16 teams ( white group ). A total of 31 teams played in two groups for promotion to the Süper Lig and against relegation to the then third division TFF 3rd Lig . As a further change to the preseason, the number of relegations was increased from two to three. So the top of the table in both groups rose directly to the higher Süper Lig. In addition to these top two in the table, the third and last promoted team was determined this season through a play-off encounter between the runners-up. The teams in the last two places in the Red Group and the bottom of the White Group were relegated to the third division (3rd Lig).

At the beginning of the season, the two relegated teams from the Süper Lig Göztepe Izmir , Giresunspor and the three newly promoted teams from the then third division TFF 3. Lig Tekirdağspor , Urfaspor and Düzcespor were added to the 27 teams remaining from the previous season .

MKE Kırıkkalespor reached the championship of the group red and thus the first ascent in the club's history to the Süper Lig . In the white group , Göztepe Izmir secured the championship and thus managed to return directly to the Süper Lig. The Turkish Football Association had the champions of the league determined by a play-off between the two first-placed teams. In this encounter, MKE Kırıkkalespor met against Göztepe Izmir and won the championship after penalties. However, the Turkish Football Association later declared both clubs to be champions of the TFF 1st Lig.

At the end of the season, Giresunspor and Manisaspor from the red group and Sivasspor from the white group were determined to be relegated. While the relegation battle in the red group was unproblematic, the situation in the white group was more explosive. Altınordu Izmir was not last in the table, but had the worst goal difference of any relegation-threatened team and would be relegated in the event of a loss or a tie. Therefore you had on the final day against Iskenderunspor a walkover win. Altınordu decided the game 8: 1 and managed to stay in the league with the penultimate place in the table. Instead, Sivasspor had to relegate. The Sivasspors club management expressed strong suspicion of match-fixing in the Altinordu-İskenderunspor encounter and asked the Turkish Football Association (TFF) to conduct an investigation. Several politicians, mostly from the province of Sivas , immediately followed suit and made sure that this topic was given more and more attention nationwide. The national football association carried out a thorough investigation and then stated on June 27, 1979 that it had found clear signs of match-fixing between the two teams. As a result, the association decided that Altinordu and İskenderunspor had to be relegated and Sivasspor was allowed to stay in the league instead. After this decision, representatives of all three clubs came to the capital Ankara and tried to influence them in their favor. While Altinordu and İskenderunspor appealed, Sivasspor tried to uphold the verdict. The discussions continued until October 1978. The association ended this by rejecting the objection of both clubs.

The top scorer of the group red was Raşit Çetiner from the West Anatolian representative Kocaelispor with 17 goals . In the white group , Ali Çağlar from Göztepe Izmir was also the top scorer with 17 goals. Thus, both players with the same number of goals were the top scorer of the entire season.

    1On the last day of the match Altınordu Izmir and İskenderunspor played against each other in Izmir . In this decisive encounter for the relegation battle Altınordu won 8: 1 and was able to secure relegation before Sivasspor . Sivasspor went to the sports court with the allegation of match manipulation. After a thorough investigation, the sports court confirmed the allegation. Then Altınordu and İskenderunspor had to relegate and Sivasspor remain in the league. The game was rated with a 0: 3 defeat for both teams.
