The Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi 1978/79 was the twelfth season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It was started on September 16, 1978 with the 1st game day and ended on May 20, 1979 with the 22nd game day.

As in the previous season, the league was played as a two-pronged league. For the two newcomers of the previous season, the four second division relegated were added. For six relegated to the regional amateur league, no teams were added due to the lack of promoters from this league. The total number of teams decreased by two teams compared to the previous season. The two groups were again referred to as group red and group white and designed with eleven and twelve teams respectively. In contrast to the previous season, not only did the top of the table climb directly into the second league , but also both runners-up. The last three in the red group and the last two in the white group were relegated to the regional amateur league.

At the beginning of the season, the four relegated teams from the 2nd Lig Giresunspor , Manisaspor , İskenderunspor and Altınordu Izmir were added to the 22 teams remaining from the previous season . There were no newcomers who were either accepted as champions from the then fourth-class regional amateur leagues or who met the requirements of the Turkish Football Association and were thus allowed to participate in the third-highest division.

Lüleburgazspor (group red) and Erzurumspor (group white) reached in their groups the championship of the 3rd league and thus direct promotion to the 2nd league. The two second-placed Altınordu Izmir (group red) and Giresunspor (group white) also achieved the direct promotion and thus direct promotion back to the 2nd league. While Lüleburgazspor returned to participation in the 2nd league after five years of abstinence, Erzurumspor managed to participate in the 2nd league again after six years of abstinence.

End of the season rose from the Red Group İstanbulspor , Galata SK , Usakspor and out of the White group Petrol Ofisi SK , Konya Ereglispor and Iskenderunspor from the 3. Lig.
