The Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi 1997/98 was the 27th season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It was started on August 17, 1997 with the 1st matchday and ended on May 3, 1998 with the 32nd and final matchday.

Competition mode

In the 1997/98 season, the TFF 1st Lig was played as an eight-track league, as in the previous season. Furthermore, the total number of teams has been reduced from 140 to 135. These 135 teams played in eight groups with 17 and 18 teams each for promotion to the 2nd league or against relegation to the regional amateur leagues. The division of the league was carried out regionally, so that mostly all teams in a group came from neighboring or close to one another provinces . All first-placed teams went straight to the second league , while the last two teams in all groups were relegated. Only in group 3 was only the bottom of the table relegated. In addition, one of the runners-up got promoted.

Beginning of the season were the remaining from the previous season 114 Teams nine relegated from the 2. Lig Nişantaşıspor , Anadoluhisarı İdman Yurdu , Muglaspor , Balikesirspor , Inegölspor , Alanyaspor , Ünyespor , Iskenderunspor , Bingölspor , the twelve newcomers Nusaybin Demirspor , Diyarbakir Köy Hizmetleri SK , Iğdırspor , Sivas Demirspor , Elazığ Belediyespor , Kilimli Belediyespor , Ankara ASAŞ , Gaziemirspor , Yeni Bornovaspor , Darıca Gençlerbirliği , Bayrampaşa Makelspor , Bigaspor have been added. The newcomers had been accepted as champions from the then fourth-class regional amateur leagues and were allowed to take part in the third division.

Ağrıspor ( Group 1 ), Gümüşhane Doğanspor ( Group 2 ), Fırat Üniversitesi SK ( Group 3 ), Kilimli Belediyespor ( Group 4 ), Petrol Ofisi SK ( Group 5 ), Izmirspor ( Group 6 ), Pendikspor ( Group 7 ), Çorluspor ( Group 8 ) achieved the championship of the 3rd Lig in their groups and thus the direct promotion to the 2nd Lig . Since in the second division season 1996/97 Erzincanspor was exempted from competition due to a serious traffic accident and was kept despite relegation place in the league, rose this season instead of the usual two runner-up only Amasyaspor as the only runner-up.

End of the season were from the Group 1 Kızıltepespor , Muşspor , from the Group 2 Igdirspor , Siva Demirspor , from the Group 3 Nizip Belediye Olimpiyatspor , from the Group 4 Kozlu Belediyespor , Ankara Köy Hizmetleri SK , from the group 5 Konya Yolspor , Kütahya Seramikspor , from group 6 Yeni Bornovaspor , Sökespor , from group 7 Bozüyükspor , Karamürselspor and from group 8 Kepezspor , Keşanspor as relegated to the regional amateur league.

At the start of the season, several clubs changed their names. Diyarbakır PTT was renamed Diyarbakır Telekom Gençlikspor , Kayseri Erciyesspor into Melikgazi Belediyesi Erciyesspor , Erdemir Ereğlispor into Erdemirspor and Dardanel Kepezspor into Kepezspor .
