history

Foundation and the first years

The club was founded in 1955 under the leadership of Rafet Yüce and Aziz Saka under the name Gebze Gençlik Spor Kulübü (in German: Gebze Youth Sports Club ). After the club was founded, the club played in the regional leagues for a long time. In 1977, following the general trend of the time, the club name Gençlik Spor Kulübü (in German: youth sports club ) was only converted to Spor Kulübü (in German: sports club ) and the club was renamed Gebze Spor Kulübü , Gebzespor for short .

Entry into professional football and the third division years

After Turkish professional football had been reduced from three to just two professional leagues in the summer of 1980, the third highest professional football league, the 3rd Lig , now known as TFF 2nd Lig , was reintroduced in 1984 on the directive of then President Turgut Özal . In addition, it was announced that one could apply for participation in the league after certain conditions had been met. In order to promote urban development, several city notables tried to meet the requirements. After the conditions were met, the Turkish Football Association confirmed participation. So Gebzespor took part in the 1984/85 season of the re-introduced 3rd Lig. In the first season they finished 14th in the table. Since the season was played without relegation, the club stayed in this league for the coming season. In the following seasons, the club consolidated its position within the league and occupies almost exclusively table positions in the upper half of the table. Here the club experienced its most successful period in the second half of the 1990s. In the seasons 1994/95 , 1997/98 and 1998/99 they played for a long time for the championship and thus promotion to the TFF 1st Lig and missed this goal every time by reaching the runner-up championship.

Systemic relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig

Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-lane Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-lane and two-stage Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight -lane Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams that only occupied a middle place in the table in the third division 2000/01 season were assigned to the newly created fourth-highest Turkish division, the 3rd league, for the coming season. Gebzespor, which was affected by the earthquake in Gölcük , ended the season in 9th place in the table and had to relegate to the 3rd Lig due to the system.

Promotion to the TFF 2nd Lig

After the system-related relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig , the club played five seasons in this league. In the 2005/06 season they reached the championship TFF 3rd Lig and rose again after five years in the TFF 2nd Lig . After taking part in the competition for five seasons in this league, the 2010/11 third division season ended in last place in the table and thus relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig.

Modern times

After relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig, the club fought for a long time in its first fourth division season against relegation and achieved relegation at the end of the season. In the fourth division season 2012/13 the club finished the TFF 3rd Lig as bottom of the table and said goodbye to Turkish professional football after 28 years.
