Earthquake damage in İzmit (August 26, 1999)

The earthquake of Gölcük occurred on 17 August 1999 at 03:01 local time in Turkey . The cities hardest hit were İzmit , Yalova , Gölcük and Adapazarı . The earthquake , the epicenter of which was around 80 km east-southeast of the old town of Istanbul , reached a magnitude of 7.6 on the moment-magnitude scale . It also caused a tsunami in the Sea of ​​Marmara , the wave was up to 2.5 meters high. Civil society supported one another extensively in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The earthquake corresponded to the abrupt movement of two neighboring clods of earth on a 130 km long section of the North Anatolian fault between the Eurasian and Anatolian plates . This section stretched from the Gulf of Izmit on the Marmara Sea to far into the mainland. The amount of offset at the corresponding fault was more than five meters.

A total of 18,373 people died and 48,901 were injured in the quake, according to a parliamentary report published in 2010.

consequences

In response to the earthquake, a 7.5 percent earthquake tax was introduced in Turkey to finance reconstruction and to prepare the state for future earthquakes.
