Sakarya is a province of Turkey . Its capital is Adapazarı . It takes its name from the river Sakarya , the ancient Sangarius .
The province has 976,948 inhabitants (as of 2016) on an area of 4,895 km². It borders the provinces of Düzce , Bolu , Bilecik , Kocaeli and Bursa .
Sakarya was the center of an earthquake in 1999 that killed 24,000 people.
university
There are approximately 35,000 students at the State University of Sakarya . There is also a library with around 40,000 books and space for up to 500 students. Its forerunner, a school of technology and architecture that worked closely with Istanbul University, dates back to 1970. It has been an independent university since 1992.
Counties
The provincial capital Adapazarı has been a major city (Büyükşehir Belediyesi) since 2000. After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Sakarya. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Therefore the 16 districts are also urban districts:
