Adapazarı is a Turkish city in the Marmara region with 269,079 inhabitants. It is the provincial capital of Sakarya Province .

history

Originally, Adapazarı was a small village that was located on a branch of the Sakarya River and therefore after the Turkish occupation under Sultan Orhan I in 1324 simply Ada  /آدا( Island ) was called. It is mentioned for the first time in a document by Orhan I about a Vaḳıf foundation. In 1795 a document mentions the village for the first time under the modern name Ada Pāzārı  /آدا پازارى( Island market place ) as the seat of an administrative officer . In 1852/1853 the village was elevated to a town. Around 1890 the city had 24,000 inhabitants, in the 1950 census the population had risen to 36,210.

Economy, administration and infrastructure

Adapazari is located in one of the economically growing regions of Turkey and benefits from its proximity to the large sales market of Istanbul and the ports in İzmit . Important branches of the economy are the textile industry, industrial suppliers and services. In addition, the city benefits from the fertile soils ( marsh soils ) in the area. In addition to agriculture, which is moving more and more into the background, industry is becoming increasingly important. A majority of the population works in industrial production, including in the Toyota car factory, the tire manufacturer Goodyear, the EUROTEM express train factory and the Otokar truck factory . In addition, several large companies in Turkey, such as Toprak Holding, are based in Adapazari. Adapazari is conveniently located on the route between Istanbul and Ankara . Important railway lines and highways between the two metropolises run through Adapazari.

earthquake

Adapazarı received international attention due to the earthquake on August 17, 1999 . A very large part of the city center was destroyed, killing several thousand people. Like Gölcük and Izmit, Adapazarı was one of the cities worst hit by the earthquake.

Two main factors contributed to the great destruction: On the one hand, Adapazarı is located on the North Anatolian Fault , on the other hand, the center of the city was built on relatively loose ground. Today a permanent exhibition commemorates the victims and the consequences of the quake. More than 18,000 people died in Turkey as a result of the tragedy.

Thanks to numerous donations from all over the world, the city was able to be rebuilt. A 26 million loan from the European Reconstruction Loan Corporation also contributed to this .
