The Supersport World Championship is a racing class for near-series motorcycles . It is also known under the abbreviation WSS and has been officially held as a world championship under the umbrella of the FIM since 1999 . The races take place as part of the Superbike World Championship and are often very tight due to the high power density of the motorcycles.
Racing machines that are close to series production are described as super athletes in the sense of the World Cup regulations. The maximum displacement is 600 cm³ for four-cylinder , 675 cm³ for three-cylinder and 750 cm³ for two-cylinder machines.
The first winner of the class on March 28, 1999 in Kyalami , South Africa, was Iain MacPherson from Great Britain on Kawasaki . The record world champion is the Turk Kenan Sofuoğlu with five titles won.
