Sandro Cortese
Alessandro "Sandro" Cortese (born January 6, 1990 in Ochsenhausen ) is a German motorcycle racer . In the 2012 season he started on a KTM for the Red Bull Ajo Motorsport team in the Moto3 class of the motorcycle world championship and became world champion.
Career
Sandro Cortese grew up as the son of an Italian and a German on his parents' metal construction company in Berkheim an der Iller . He began to ride a small motorcycle motocross at the age of two and a half ; later also pocket bike . In 2003 and 2004 the 1.69 m tall Cortese took part in the International German Motorcycle Championship in the 125 cm³ class. In the final accounts of the championship, he finished fourth (2003) and tenth (2004). In 2004 he competed against Stefan Bradl , among others , who finished fifth overall.
In 2005 , Cortese completed his first full season in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship for the German Kiefer-Bos-Sotin Racing team of the Kiefer brothers on a Honda . He finished 26th in the world championship with eight points.
For the 2006 season, Cortese switched to Daniel Epp's Swiss elite team , where he became a team-mate of previous year's world champion Thomas Lüthi . With a previous year's factory Honda , Cortese scored 23 points and climbed to 17th place in the final score.
In the 2007 season , Cortese started again for his team from the previous year, which was now called Emmi-Caffe-Latte and started on Aprilia . He was able to show some highlights in qualifying, but most of the races didn't go that well.
For the motorcycle world championship in 2008 , Cortese got an official factory Aprilia, the same motorcycle as the world champion Gábor Talmácsi . At the beginning of the season he was handicapped by an injury, but Cortese improved from race to race. Shortly before the end of the season, he achieved his best result to date. In fourth place at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang he missed a podium place by just 30 hundredths of a second. In the overall standings, Sandro Cortese finished 8th with 141 points.
At the opening race of the 2009 season , the Grand Prix of Qatar in Losail , Cortese, meanwhile on a 125 cm³ Derbi of the Ajo Interwetten team , with whom Frenchman Mike Di Meglio had become world champion last year, was one after four laps due to rain canceled third race and thus drove his first podium in the motorcycle world championship. In June 2009 he got his first pole position in Assen , the Netherlands .
In May 2011 he founded the Sandro Cortese Junior Bike School , with which he takes care of young racers. On August 14, 2011, he clinched his first Grand Prix victory in Brno at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic , having previously remained without a win in 108 races in the World Championship. At the end of the 2011 season , Cortese reached fourth place overall in the world championship in the 125 cc class with 225 points.
In the Moto3 class, which replaced the eight-liter category in 2012 , Cortese became the first German in 41 years to win the Sachsenring Grand Prix on July 8, 2012, taking the lead in the world championship. On October 21, he won the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang , the third from last run of the championship, and was thus prematurely the first world champion in the Moto3 class. On November 17, 2012, his home parish and 7,000 fans prepared a reception for him in the town hall, where he signed the Golden Book. MotoGP driver Stefan Bradl and DTM champion Mattias Ekström were also present. Matthias Dolderer flew low over the community of Berkheim several times in foggy weather. KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer gave him his bike .
From the 2013 season, Cortese drove in the newly founded Intact GP team under the direction of Jürgen Lingg, Wolfgang Kuhn and Stefan Keckeisen on a Kalex in the Moto2 class. In his first season he finished 20th in the overall classification. In his second year in the Moto2 World Championship, he finished ninth in the overall classification. In 2015 he finished the season in eleventh place.
For the 2018 season, Sandro Cortese moved to the Finnish team Kallio Racing in the FIM - Supersport World Championship . With two wins and a total of 208 World Championship points, he immediately secured the World Championship title. In the overall standings, Cortese had 23 points on defending champion Lucas Mahias ( Kawasaki ) from the end of the season .
Cortese competed in the 2019 season in the Superbike World Championship for the Italian GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team on Yamaha . He finished his first year in the Superbike World Championship in 12th place overall. In 2020 he will also compete in the Superbike World Championship, but switched to the OUTDO Kawasaki TPR team .
