Yamaha YZF-R 1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yamaha YZF-R 1 - R1 for short - is a motorcycle in the super sports / superbikes category from the R series from the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha Motor .

history

1997-1999 RN01

The first model was presented to the world public on September 15, 1997 at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan and had the internal code no. 08R. The R 1 was a completely redesigned motorcycle. The engine output at market launch was 110 kW (150 hp) with a maximum torque of 108 Nm and a dry weight of 177 kg. At 65.3 kg, the 11.8: 1 compressed, 998 cm³ engine was 9.5 kg lighter and 81 mm shorter than that of its predecessor, the YZF 1000 R Thunderace . The fuel-air mixture delivered four 40-mm Mikuni - carburetor . In the engine, the housing-cylinder unit was cast in one piece and served as a load-bearing chassis element. The chassis consisted of a stiff aluminum bridge frame, an upside-down fork and an aluminum two-armed swing arm with upper pull. A 1,395 mm short wheelbase , a steep steering head angle of 66 ° and just 92 mm caster were further key data of the radical machine. The very short engine also allowed a very long swing arm of 582 mm and thus brought more traction .

2000-2001 RN04

In the 2000 model year, the R 1 was revised in numerous points. These include lower mechanical engine noise, a weight reduction of 2 kg, improved (more linear) power delivery, lighter titanium rear silencers, improved transmission function, fewer plastic parts and modified aerodynamics.

2002-2003 RN09

In 2002 Yamaha introduced the third generation of the R 1, in which almost all parts were new or further developed. The motorcycle now had intake manifold injection , a new fairing, a screwed - previously welded - rear frame and a newly designed Deltabox III frame. The maximum output was 112 kW (152 hp) at 10,500 min -1 .

The power delivery was changed. Because the engines of the first generation offered from 3.000 min -1 an abruptly increasing torque, which overwhelmed even some experienced driver. There were several serious falls from highsiders , i.e. a spinning rear wheel, with the rider being thrown upwards by strong swiveling, which is more likely to lead to serious injuries than slipping away on the lowsider . From model year 2002 onwards, this problem was addressed with a more even performance characteristic. As a result, the Yamaha R 1 no longer seemed so powerful, but the number of accidents fell. In the 2002 and 2003 models, the throttle response was also smoother, which further improved drivability.

2004-2005 RN12

The fourth R 1 generation appeared in 2004 as a reaction to the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 , which was heavily revised in 2003 and which emerged as the superior winner in all comparative tests in the trade press. In addition, Honda presented its new CBR 1000 RR Fireblade in 2004 , which was now also strengthened to a full liter displacement . Once again, the R 1 was completely revised with the generation change. The Japanese engineers succeeded in increasing the peak output of the now very high-revving engine by 13% to 172 hp through higher compression , larger cylinder bore and shorter piston stroke, larger free valve cross-sections and fine work on almost every engine detail. Another new feature was a ram-air pressure system, with which around 10 hp more power was achieved at top speed. The aerodynamics was an integrated into the rear end silencer improved. In addition, a steering damper was installed as standard for the first time .

2006 RN12 "Facelift"

In 2006, the top performance was increased by three to 175 hp by revising the intake and exhaust ports. A 20 mm longer swing arm and the fifth generation Deltabox frame were further changes. In addition to the normal R 1, a limited edition YZF-R 1 SP was offered with a special paint finish, anti-hopping clutch , high-quality Öhlins spring elements and light and elegant Marchesini forged wheels.

2007 RN19

For the 2007 model year, a heavily revised fifth generation of the YZF-R 1 was presented at the Intermot in Cologne . The new version is technically very similar to the 2006 YZF-R 6 . For example, Yamaha also installed the YCC-T drive-by-wire system (electronic throttle valve control) in the new R 1 , in which the throttle valves are opened by means of a servomotor and closed by means of a cable. In addition, it has suction pipes that are electronically adjustable in length (YCC-I). After a long 5-valve tradition, Yamaha is now returning to 4 valves per cylinder to give the engine more torque in the lower and middle speed range. Other innovations include a 6-piston front brake, a steering damper and an anti-hopping clutch . Yamaha specifies a maximum output of 132 kW (180 PS) for the new YZF-R 1 (139 kW (189 PS) with a dynamic pressure system) at a dry weight of 177 kg.

2009 RN22

The R1 has had a crossplane crankshaft since 2009 , which distinguishes it from important competitors. With the 90 ° crank pin offset and appropriately coordinated firing order, the in-line four-cylinder sounds like a V4 engine ("Big Bang"). In the mid-rev range, more power is offered than in the predecessor. The look with the two "bulging eyes" headlights and the voluminous underseat silencer was initially controversial. With a full tank, the heaviest of the R1 weighs 214 kg. From 2012 there will only be traction control. An ABS is not offered until the end.

2015 RN32

After 6 years, the successor will be presented in 2015. With 200 HP and 199 kg empty weight, the weight of the original R1 is reached again. In addition, the R1 got a complete electronics package. Consists of: Launch Control, Slide Control, Traction Control and Wheelie Control, as well as 4 different power modes. ABS is a matter of course. The test riders attest to the RN32's very compact seating position (but not uncomfortable and also suitable for taller riders) and the driving experience that this motorcycle comes very close to a racing motorcycle.

2017 RN49

For 2017, among other things, the electronics and the 4-in-2-in-1 titanium exhaust system were adapted to the Euro 4 regulations.
