The Yamaha YZF-R 7 (factory designation OW-02 ) is a super sports motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha . A total of 500 copies were made between 1999 and 2002. Like its predecessor, the OW-01, the YZF-R7 was primarily used as a homologation model for the 750 cm³ class in the Superbike World Championship . Its new price in 1999 was 44,990 DM and was thus more than twice as high as the new price of the YZF-R1 .

technology

The R7 was not just a roadworthy machine that could also race, it was a competition motorcycle with lights and a starter . The roots of Yamaha can already be seen in the engine design, which like the YZF-R1 had five valves per cylinder , a unit of cylinder and crankcase and a vertically staggered gearbox. The engine dimensions were identical to those of the YZF 750 SP. In contrast to this, the YZF-R 7 had intake manifold injection . The cylinder head parts were CNC machined to achieve precise dimensions and a perfect balance between the cylinders.

The lightweight innards included titanium valves and connecting rods, and forged pistons with nickel-plated bottoms for better durability. The chassis was similarly exotic. The black paint on the frame suggested that it was more of a 500cc GP machine than previous street models. The spars of the main frame contained an additional aluminum layer, which promised a torsional stiffness that was doubled compared to the YZF-R 1. The sophisticated 43 mm upside-down fork and the rear shock absorber came from Öhlins . The steering geometry and position of the swing arm bearing can be adjusted.

The YZF-R 7 was prepared for equipping with a racing set, which, however, turned out to be small because of the few modifications required (the peak power without the set was only 100 hp to facilitate worldwide homologation). The most important component was the large carbon fiber air box, which allowed the use of a ram air system. In addition, the conversion kit also contained a carbon fiber silencer.

Flat steering stubs, rear-set footrests and a single seat underlined the racing intention. The flexibility of the engine made the machine easy to drive at moderate speeds, but it was only at high speeds that the lightweight innards came into play, and the Yamaha showed strong acceleration. With the racing set, the YZF-R 7 developed around 160 hp at 13,700 revolutions, enough for a top speed of 290 km / h. The stiff, multi-adjustable chassis of the YZF-R 7 combined direct steering with stability and precision. Every detail of the road or racetrack was reported directly to the driver, so that the cornering ability was far above that of normal sports motorcycles. This was mainly thanks to the outstanding Öhlins suspension. In addition, the two front brake discs delivered an enormous braking power.
