Previous model Yamaha XTZ 660 Ténéré

The Yamaha XT 660 Z Ténéré is a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha . The enduro was already in October 2007 as Yamaha XT 600 Z previously 25 years in Morocco presented. The suffix Ténéré refers to the North African sand desert Ténéré . The model codes are DM021 without ABS and DM04 (XT 660 ZA) with ABS.

Technical specifications

The engine and chassis geometry largely come from the Enduro Yamaha XT 660 R , the wheelbase and overall length are almost identical. Compared to the sister model, in addition to the fairing, the airbox , the radiator and the manifold of the exhaust system have been changed.

engine

The liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine produced from 660 cc a nominal power of 35 kW (48 hp) and a maximum torque of 58 Nm at a speed of 5500 min -1 . The cylinder has a bore of Ø 100 mm, the piston has a stroke of 84 mm with a compression ratio of 10: 1. The cylinder head has a chain-driven, overhead camshaft (SOHC) , which controls two inlet and two outlet valves. The four-stroke engine has electronic fuel injection and transistor ignition. A balance shaft reduces vibrations.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 s and reaches a top speed of 160 km / h.

landing gear

The undercarriage is based on a tubular single-loop frame with double steel upper cables and has a two-arm aluminum swing arm at the rear. The rear suspension with central strut offers a suspension travel of 200 mm. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a Ø 43 mm standpipe diameter and 210 mm travel.

The model with ABS has a travel of 160 mm at the front and 145 mm at the rear.

Braking system

Two floating disc brakes with a diameter of 298 mm and two 2-piston fixed calipers from Brembo slow down the front wheel. A single disc brake with a diameter of 245 mm and a single-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel. From 2011 there was a version with an anti-lock braking system .

The Ténéré was delivered with cross-spoke wheels as standard. The rim sizes are 1.85 × 21 ″ at the front and 2.75 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 90 / 90-21 at the front and 130 / 80-17 at the rear.

From 2013 ABS was offered as an equipment variant. This model had the designation XT 660 ZA.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by electronic fuel injection. The ignition is digitally controlled by a transistor-controlled spark plug. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The fuel tank has a volume of 23 liters.

Electrics

The starter battery has a capacity of 8 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator probably generates an electrical output of approx. 280 watts, in contrast to the manual, which states 190 watts.

Exhaust system

The exhaust gas aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and falls below the limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The exhaust manifold leads to two rear silencers with single-chamber silencers. The fulfillment of the Euro 4 standard was not achieved with this engine and then led to the end of sales in Germany.

Known weak points

The Ténéré has a number of known weaknesses that are relatively easy to fix.

  1. Vibration damper
    1. Description: After 10,000 - 15,000 km, the rubbers in the rear wheel wear out so much that the rear chain sprocket (chain wheel) has too much play.
    2. Remedy:
      1. Place pieces of tubing between the shock absorber and the sprocket carrier, then change the pieces of tubing you have used yourself every time you change tires.
      2. Alternatively, use the shock absorber of the XT 600.
  2. Idle speed
    1. Description: Incorrect idling speed caused by adjustment of the regulation due to vibrations.
    2. Remedy: There is a small screw next to the gas tap that regulates the idle speed.
  3. Connection of the alternator to the charge regulator
    1. Description: Battery is not charging. The plug connection to the charge controller is vulnerable.
    2. Remedy: Open the plug, solder the pins and pour.
  4. Durability of the original chain
    1. Description: Like many other motorcycles, the durability of the chain is often criticized.
    2. Remedy:
      1. Chain set from the accessory trade.
      2. And additionally grease the chain regularly or use an automatic chain oiler.
  5. Imprecise pressure points of the brakes
    1. Description: An imprecise pressure point is often criticized, especially on the rear brake.
    2. Remedy: Replacing the rubber lines with steel braided lines, improves the pressure point and the service life of the line.

Reviews

“With this model, Yamaha is not relying on enormous power or torque, but more on stability for the very long tour. The engine has long been known from the XT 660 R. A frugal drive that can manage with 4 liters per 100 km on the go - with a tank volume of 22 liters that is enough for a good 500 km. "

“Back on firm ground, the journeyman doesn't seem quite as confident anymore. Above 5500 rpm it looks bland and begins to annoy with increasing vibrations despite the balance shaft. The Yamaha whizzes over the winding asphalt paths of southern Morocco with great stability and precision, but because of the limited range of motion it wants to be guided through alternating curves with a little physical effort. "

“The expectation that the Ténéré's sporty look arouses cannot be fully met by the 660. The somewhat sluggish single-cylinder engine urgently needs modernization. "

- Peter Mayer : Motorbike

“Six thousand nine hundred and ninety-five euros! You have to let that melt in your mouth first. 6,995 euros for a motorcycle with which you can set off to circumnavigate the world directly from the Yamaha showroom. Without even having to change a screw, without having to put a few monthly salaries in accessories. Drive off, just like that, and it won't be the most strenuous form of circumnavigation, we just dare to say that. "
