The Yamaha MT-03 is an undisguised motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Yamaha , which was initially produced in the period 2006-2014. Another model with the same name has been produced since 2016, which differs fundamentally from the first version in terms of engine, chassis and design.
First version (2006-2014)
A concept study was presented at the EICMA two-wheeler fair in Milan in autumn 2003 and the sales version at the Paris fair a year later. The naked bike came on the market in early 2006 in a version of the single-cylinder sports motorcycle that was adapted for series production. The fun bike, marketed as a “sport roadster”, is similar in some design elements to the MT-01, which was released in 2005 . The final assembly of the motorcycle was carried out by Belgarda-Yamaha on Lake Garda . For the 2014 model year, the MT-03 was withdrawn from the range.
drive
The MT-03 is powered by the same single cylinder engine as the Enduro Yamaha XT 660 R and the travel enduro Yamaha XT 660 Z Ténéré . The four-stroke engine from the engine manufacturer Minarelli generates a nominal output of 35 kW (48 hp) at a speed of 6250 rpm. The maximum torque is 56.2 Nm at 5500 rpm. The performance of the engine has been increased by an enlarged airbox volume and a modified ignition map of the injection system at low and medium speeds.
The ceramic-coated cylinder made of aluminum has a bore of Ø 100 mm, the forged piston has a stroke of 84 mm with a compression ratio of 10: 1. The compact cylinder head has a chain-driven, roller-bearing, overhead camshaft (SOHC) , which controls two inlet and two outlet valves via forked roller rocker arms . The four-stroke engine , which is inclined slightly forwards, has electronic fuel injection with transistor ignition. A balance shaft reduces vibrations.
With a full tank, the motorcycle weighs around 194 kg without special accessories, which is comparatively high for this performance class. The manufacturer specifies a top speed of around 160 km / h.
landing gear
The exhaust gases of the engine equipped with an injection system are processed by an unregulated catalytic converter in conjunction with a secondary air system . Power is transmitted via a five-speed transmission and - in contrast to the concept car, which still had a toothed belt drive - a chain drive . The brake system (front double disc with 298 mm and rear single disc with 245 mm diameter) comes from the Yamaha FZ6 and is very reliable and effective. The overall ratio (gear steps 2.500 / 1.625 / 1.150 / 0.909 / 0.769, primary ratio 2.080, secondary ratio 3.130) is shorter than that of the XT660 , which enables higher acceleration values . The motorcycle has compact dimensions, a wheelbase of 1,420 mm and, in connection with the short suspension travel of 130 mm at the front and 120 mm at the rear, is very handy with a tendency to be nervous. The moderate tire dimensions (front 120/70 ZR17 M / C 58H, rear 160/60 ZR17 M / C 69H) enable neutral steering and cornering behavior. The telescopic fork is almost identical to that of the FZ6 , the rear wheel is guided in a two-arm swing arm cast from aluminum . The rear suspension strut, which is linked by a lever and attached to the side, comes from the supplier Sachs .
The seating position on the seat, which is 805 mm high for the driver, is upright, close to the handlebars and comparable to that on a supermoto . The slightly raised pillion seat is not suitable for longer tours for two. The tachometer is as an analog round instrument, the speedometer with odometer as digital liquid crystal display executed. The fuel tank holds 15 liters, the manufacturer recommends the use of premium gasoline.
Market positioning
When it was launched in 2006, the list price was 6,695 euros including ancillary costs. Direct competitors for the MT-03 with comparable performance data and chassis geometry include the Derbi Mulhacén 659 , the Aprilia Pegaso Factory - both with the same engine as in the MT-03 - the BMW G 650 Xmoto , but also the clearly more powerful KTM Duke . Within this competition, the price demanded for the MT-03 was traditionally at the lower end. Since the 2012 model year, however, the list price for the (technically unchanged) MT-03 at 7,250 euros has been just as high as for the even more performance-enhanced and better-equipped KTM Duke.
Reviews
“The small MT-03 does not attract as much attention as the mighty MT-01, but the similarity is clear. Style-defining design elements such as the two tall silencers come from the MT concept, and the visual emphasis on the center is a reminder of this. However, the shrunken »engine mountain« looks far less imposing: The MT-03 has an unadorned single cylinder. "
“After a short period of getting used to it, the little Yamaha cuts a fine figure when it comes to swirling around bends; With the double disc at the front and the incredibly stable run through the curves, you immediately feel a sense of security. With one important restriction: for drivers over 1.85 meters tall, the geometry of the tank, seat, footrests and handlebars no longer fits; the hollow of the knee is decidedly too small and tiresome quickly. "

A completely new model of the MT-03 came onto the market in 2016 after being presented to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2015 and at the EICMA in November 2015 . The new MT-03 develops around 42 hp from two cylinders with 321 cm³. Except for the name and the bare design, the current model has hardly adopted anything from the original concept.
