The Yamaha MT-09 is a motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Yamaha . After a three-cylinder engine concept was presented at the Intermot 2012 motorcycle fair , in June 2013, for the first time since the Yamaha XS 750 in the 1970s, Yamaha presented a motorcycle with a three-cylinder engine. In some countries it is also offered as FZ-09 or FZ-9. At the EICMA 2013 in Milan, a model variant was added with the Street Rally version that stands out from the basic model with additional trim parts. Another model variant came out in August 2014 with the Sport-Tracker. For the 2015 model year, the “Tracer” variant was presented, which differs more clearly from the basic model and makes the MT-09 suitable for longer touring trips with a passenger and luggage.

In the middle of 2015, Yamaha presented the XSR 900, which is reminiscent of a classic appearance due to predominantly optical changes and is also propagated as an independent model.

Construction

drive

The newly developed three-cylinder engine has a crank pin offset of 120 °. For reasons of manufacturing accuracy , the pistons are connected to the crankshaft via broken connecting rods and run in coated cylinders without liners. The Yamaha MT-09 is the first multi-cylinder series machine from Yamaha in which all cylinders are slightly offset to the center of the crankshaft, which should lead to less friction losses. The injection system works with 12-hole injection nozzles directly on the cylinder head of the four-valve engine.

Adapted exhaust manifolds and lines of different lengths to the intake tract support the power output. At the same time, the engine noise is optimized by the manifold routing and 3-in-1 exhaust system.

By means of an adjustable control of the engine electronics, the driver can switch between the modes STD (standard), A (sport) and B (rain) and thus ensure a modified response behavior of the engine. In B mode, the engine responds more gently and loses 10 hp maximum power.

landing gear

The use of a central spring strut under the seat, an upside-down fork , the rear silencer installed under the engine and light aluminum wheels ensure that the masses are centralized. This concept originally developed by Buell leads to improved handling. The spring elements can be adjusted in the rebound stage, with the Tracer the rear spring strut can also be changed in the compression stage. The choice of driving mode does not affect the suspension setting (no electronically adjustable suspension).

Others

The seating position is upright and slightly oriented towards the front. The multifunctional display is digitally designed as a liquid crystal display and, in addition to the rev display and speed display, also includes the time and a gear display. The fuel tank holds 14 liters (tracer: 18 liters), the manufacturer recommends the use of E10 premium petrol . The Street Rally version has a small handlebar fairing, hand protectors, air scoops on the radiator and a higher seat. The Sport-Tracker variant has special attachments such as modified footrests, start number plates, short wheel covers and other extras. The Tracer model has a frame-mounted cladding that can be equipped with windshields of different sizes. In addition, an extended rear frame, height-adjustable bench and luggage rack. A larger tank and a different instrument unit, as well as a standard main stand, are further distinguishing features. This increases the ready-to-drive curb weight to 210 and the dimensions change slightly.

The XSR was designed with a different tank, modified exhaust muffler, round headlights and a modified rear for a so-called retro appearance. This variant can be further changed individually by the owner using a large selection of accessories.

From 2016, the electronics were supplemented as standard with a two-stage traction control . In addition, the driving modes have been revised and adjusted differently.

Model series RN43 (from 2017)

Extensive changes in design and technology have been made. Except for the engine, which is largely unchanged. A new exhaust system was designed to meet the requirements of the EURO-4 emissions standards. The engine mappings for the driving modes (1 / hour / 2) have been adapted and roughly correspond to the last update of the RN29 in which the throttle response was made softer and more homogeneous. The suspension strut, which was previously felt to be too soft, has been replaced by a tighter one and the suspension fork is adjustable in preload, as well as in rebound and compression. The front mask is designed more aggressively and is attached lower, which means that the speedometer moves a little forward and can therefore be read better. Low beam, high beam and parking lights are made using LED technology. The front indicators are no longer part of the front mask and are now located on the side of the newly designed radiator panels. The rear has been adapted to the new design and the rear light has been integrated. In addition, the license plate holder was mounted on the swing arm. There are other minor changes to the plastic cover of the clutch bell, as well as the heel protector of the right footrest system. The Quickshifter (only high) is now standard from the factory.

For the 2018 model year, the gray color choice “Night Fluo” is now semi-gloss and darker.

Since 2018 the MT-09 has also been available in the SP version with an improved chassis and a special paint job in typical Yamaha blue / silver.

Market positioning

MT-09 tracer

The naked bike is positioned in the motorcycle class between 600 and 900 cm³ and can be seen as a Japanese alternative to the Triumph Street Triple and the MV Agusta Brutale 800 . Within the Yamaha range, it is an alternative to the four-cylinder FZ-8 . The Tracer variant is aimed at the light travel enduro market such as the Triumph Tiger 800 or the Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom . The XSR, on the other hand, is aimed at the so-called Cafe Racer market, i.e. street motorcycles individually adapted by the owner.
